RADNOR, PA. – The nationally 11th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team opened up a 7-1 lead after the first quarter and pulled away late to secure an 18-13 win at 13th-ranked Cabrini in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 6-0 with the victory, and the Cavaliers fell to 5-3. Ten Cortland players scored at least one goal in the game. Junior Devin Phelps (Chittenango) led the Red Dragon offense with seven points on four goals and three assists. Junior Thomas McNaney (Marcellus) also netted four goals. Sophomore Dean Riley (Homer) totaled a career-best four points on two goals and two assists, and sophomore Joey Panariello (Islip) netted a pair of goals. Junior Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette) recorded one goal and two assists, and seniors T.J. deLyra (Brightwaters/Bay Shore) and Mike Hart (Cornelius, NC/Hough) and junior Michael O'Connor (Ossining) each tallied one goal and one assist. Senior Jimmy Nielsen (Miller Place) and freshman Joseph Poferl (Golden Valley, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong) added one goal apiece. Junior goalie Joe Scalise (Fairport) turned aside 12 shots and collected four ground balls for the Red Dragons. Hart won 13 faceoffs and scooped up 10 ground balls. Junior Trevor Pratt (Denver, CO/Colorado Academy) caused two turnovers and secured three ground balls, and Hart also caused a pair of turnovers. Jordan Krug and Evan Downey each netted three goals for Cabrini, while Jake Klein tallied a game-high nine points on two goals and seven assists. Bill Morgan scored twice, Mike Gerzabek and Timmy Brooks each recorded one goal and one assist, and Zack Gregory notched a goal. Goalie Matt Nestler made eight saves in 55:14, and Riley White stopped two shots in 4:46. Gregory won 12-of-18 faceoffs and recorded nine ground balls. Tommy DeLuca caused three turnovers and grabbed five ground balls, Downey had three caused turnovers and four ground balls and Kyle Myers also caused three turnovers. Cortland went ahead 4-0 just under 10 minutes into the game before Cabrini got on the scoreboard at the 4:30 mark of the opening quarter. The Red Dragons finished of the first quarter with three goals in the final 2:45 for a 7-1 advantage. The Cavaliers closed the gap to 8-4 late in the second quarter before Beresovoy's goal right before the horn gave Cortland a 9-4 lead at intermission. After Cortland extended its lead to 12-5 at the 8:01 mark of the third quarter, Cabrini netted five goals in a row to pull to within 12-10 with 15 minutes to play. The Red Dragons upped their lead to 14-10, but Cabrini cut it to 14-11 with 9:52 remaining. Cortland put the game away with four goals from four different players in less than a three-minute span to go ahead 18-11 with 4:35 on the clock. The Cavaliers completed the scoring with goals at 3:45 and 1:13 for the 18-13 final.
