LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville women's lacrosse rallied from an 8-3 deficit to force overtime, but fell to Vanderbilt 9-8 on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 1-4, while the Commodores remain undefeated at 4-0. "I thought it was a great lacrosse game, all around," said head coach Scott Teeter. "We let Vanderbilt build a lead on us, but I felt like we dominated the second half to force overtime. Vanderbilt's upperclassman just came down and made a play (to give them the win)." Both teams were unable to find the back of the net through the opening minutes of the game, but it was Vanderbilt who struck first just under nine minutes in the half. The Cards answered less than a minute later as Caroline Blalock netted her fifth goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1. Shayla Scanlan then rattled off back-to-back goals to give the Cards a two-goal lead, but Vanderbilt staged a 6-0 run over the final 12 minutes of the half to secure a 7-3 lead heading into the locker room. After the Commodores scored the first goal of the second half to extend their lead to 8-3, the Cardinals controlled the remainder of the half to get back into the game. Ally Hall scored two goals in less than two minutes, followed by goals by Tessa Chad and Kayla Marshall, to pull Louisville within one goal at 8-7 with 15 minutes to go. The score remained at 8-7 until Scanlan scored her third goal of the game to tie it at 8-8 and force overtime with 29 seconds to go. In overtime, both teams failed to score on their opening possession, but Vandy ended it with a goal by Emily Mathewson with four seconds left. Scanlan led the way with her second straight hat trick, while Hall added two goals. Rachel Florek had a productive day at goalie, recording 13 saves and limiting the Commodores to just two goals in the second half and overtime combined. Brenna Shanahan finished with a team-high six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Louisville forced 23 Vanderbilt turnovers, including 15 in the second half. Next up, Louisville opens Atlantic Coast Conference play at Notre Dame on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
