Longwood and VCU traded blows on Saturday afternoon, but the Rams' offense rallied late in a slugfest with the Lancers. Led by Savannah Slack's five goals, VCU used a late 6-0 run to sneak past the Lancers, 15-13 at Elizabeth Burger Jackson field. Longwood (2-5) recorded a 6-0 run of their own to flip an 8-6 deficit into a 12-8 lead with 14:15 to play in regulation, but the high-scoring VCU offense, who entered Saturday's game ranked in the top-25 nationally in points, assists, shots, and draw controls per game, rallied to score seven of the game's final eight goals in their comeback win. Senior Kaitlin Luccarelli and junior Emma Johnson, the Lancers' top two scorers, led the offense with four goals apiece. Haley Moomau added a hat trick, while Lexi Davis and Nicole Fordyce each racked up two assists. Along with Slack's five goals, Anna Koniencki tallied four goals for the Rams—Cammie Mann added a hat trick for VCU, who outshot Longwood 35-25 in the game. "This was an unfortunate loss," said head coach Elaine Jones. "We came from behind and had great momentum midway through the 2nd half, but then we lost it when our defender [Corri Calandra] was given a 2nd yellow card and VCU took advantage of it." Trailing 7-5 at the break, the Lancers offense stormed out of the gates in the second half, scoring seven of the first eight goals to begin the final period. After Emma Johnson and Anna Koniencki exchanged goals in the opening two minutes, the Lancers opened up a 6-0 run from 23:13-14:19 to take and extend their first lead of the game, 12-8. Luccarelli and Johnson each notched two goals over that stretch, with Haley Moomau and Molly Barkman collecting the other two tallies. Cammie Mann and VCU responded, ending the Lancer run with a goal at 13:11 for the Rams first goal in 14:57 minutes to make the score 12-9. Moomau notched her third goal of the game at 11:39 to inflate the Lancer lead back to four goals, 13-9, but that would be all the offense Longwood could muster the rest of the way. The Rams, who ranked 21st in the country in draw controls per game at 15.4, won eight of the final nine draws, sparking a scoring run where the Rams notched the final six goals of the contest. Longwood defender Corri Calandra, an All-Big South player in 2019, picked up her second yellow card of the game at 10:55, forcing her to sit the reminder of the contest. VCU took full advantage, as Slack tallied a hat trick in the final 10:55 to lead the late VCU rally that also saw Koniencki tally two and Mann tally one in the game's final stretch. Lancer goalkeeper Danielle Burke was strong in net for Longwood, stopping 12 shots against the explosive VCU offense while recording four ground balls. Jordan Howard, the team leader in draw controls, won seven of Longwood's 10 in the game, as nine different Lancers scooped ground balls in a team effort on defense. "Overall we had great defensive stands," continued Jones. "Dani [Burke] made several nice saves, and we generated multiple offensive goals, but we still made little mistakes throughout the game, and ultimately the accumulation of them cost us. "We are still working to achieve our goal where we eliminate these execution errors so we can have everyone playing at a high level for the entire game." The Lancers continue their four-game home stand on Wednesday, March 11 against Bryant-- play is set to start at 3 p.m.
