CHAPEL HILL –Katie Hoeg had a career-high six assists and Tayler Warehime tied her season high with four goals as sixth-ranked North Carolina beat third-ranked Syracuse, 11-5, in Atlantic Coast Conference women's lacrosse action from the UNC Lacrosse-Soccer Stadium on a rainy Saturday afternoon. With the win, Carolina improved to 11-3 overall, 4-2 in the ACC. Syracuse saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end and fell to 13-3, 5-2. Tar Heel Taylor Moreno was stellar in goal throughout the game, making 12 saves in improving to 11-3 in the cage this season. Moreno and the Tar Heel defense held Syracuse to a season-low in goals (five), the Orange's first single-digit scoring effort of the season. Syracuse's previous scoring low was 10 in a win over Notre Dame. Moreno started and played the first 59:29 of the game. Hennessey played the final 0:31 on senior day. Hoeg finished with a goal and six assists on the day. Kara Klages added three goals, two caued turnovers and two ground balls for Carolina, while Gianna Bowe had two goals and four ground balls. Oliviia Ferrucci scored once. Catie Woodruff had five ground balls for UNC. Emily Hawryschuk led the Orange with three goals and Morgan Alexander scored twice. The Tar Heels led, 5-3, at halftime behind a goal and three assists from Hoeg and two goals from Klages. The first half was a back-and-forth affair during which the Orange out-shot UNC, 15-14. Moreno made eight first-half saves. Carolina took control in the second half. Warehime scored three goals in a row in less than three minutes early in the second period to give the Tar Heels an 8-3 lead with 23:39 to play in the game. After Syracuse responded with a goal, Bowe scored unassisted from the right side to make it 9-4 and Klages scored off a Hoeg assist for a 10-4 lead. The two teams traded goals in the final 1:36 of the game. NOTABLES • The game marked the final regular season home appearances for group of nine, including Gianna Bowe, Amanda Dionne, Olivia Ferrucci, Ida Farinolt, Elise Hennessey, Erin Kelly, Kara Klages, Charlotte Sofield and manager Sidney Swormstedt, whose playing career was cut short a year ago due to injury. • The start of the game was delayed by 31 minutes, then again after halftime for 26 minutes, due to severe weather in the area. • Carolina now leads the all-time series with Syracuse, 8-6. The Tar Heels have won four in a row and six of seven over the Orange. QUOTABLE UNC Head Coach Jenny Levy after the game: "It was a great team win for us today. Syracuse is a tough program and they've had a great season. Our toughness and grit were critical today. I thought our defense played amazing and really continues to get better. On the offensive end, I thought we did a really good job. After having rain delays, wet sticks and a wet field, I thought we did a good job on the offensive end as well. Credit my coaches on both ends (Katrina Dowd on offense and Phil Barnes on defense) for having our team really well prepared today." Levy on goalie Taylor Moreno: "Taylor is so good. She's a stud, and she's just top-notch. She's talented and sees the ball well in front of her." UP NEXT The Tar Heels will be back in action next Friday night (April 19) at Duke for the final regular season game of the 2019 season.
