The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team upset No. 14 USC by a score of 12-10 in an absolute thriller at LaValle Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The victory marked the team's sixth in a row and second within a week over a ranked opponent as the Seawolves also topped No. 17 Johns Hopkins on Tuesday. QUOTING HEAD COACH Joe Spallina "I'm incredibly proud of our team. We came out with a plan and we were really efficient early. Just like any game, I tip my cap to USC. They're a great team with an incredible staff there. (Head coach) Lindsey (Munday) does an unbelievable job with her team so we knew coming into this game it was going to be an NCAA-type game, which it is. Their RPI coming into the game was top-five so the importance to this game overall was the big picture for us. I thought we stayed the course. We had some heroic efforts, but you don't beat a team like USC without having a complete team effort." HIGHLIGHTS USC had a one-goal lead early in the second half following a 6-0 scoring run, but Stony Brook scored four unanswered in six minutes to take the advantage for good. The Trojans had cut its deficit to just one with 2:01 left on the clock but Ally Kennedy (North Babylon, N.Y.) caught the keeper off guard 18 seconds later to notch the insurance goal. Kennedy tallied five total goals on the day along with five draw controls. three ground balls and an assist. She paces the team with 53 goals on the season and is also the team leader in points (61), ground balls (34) and draw controls (76). Siobhan Rafferty (Long Beach, N.Y.) recorded a hat trick and is second on the squad in goals (37) and points (41) this year. Goals also came from Rayna Sabella (Mount Sinai, N.Y.), Bridget Considine (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Taryn Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y) and Nicole Barretta (Exton, Pa.). Ohlmiller also recorded a trio of assists to tally four points. Sara Moeller (Phoenix, Md.) led all players with four assists which came on the first four goals of the game. Goalkeeper Anna Tesoriero (Huntington, N.Y.) made 11 saves, including seven in the first half. NOTES Kennedy has scored in all 14 games this season and Rafferty has notched at least one point in each contest. Kennedy is now tied for 10th in program history in single-season goals (53), tied for eighth in career points (183) and eighth in career draw controls (147). Mackenzie Burns (West Sayville, N.Y.) was a standout on defense, causing five turnovers, picking up four ground balls and winning two draws. Burns ranks eighth in school history for career caused turnovers (63). Haley Dillon (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) was also big on defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Stony Brook is 4-1 all-time against USC, winning its last three matchups. NEXT UP Stony Brook is back home at LaValle Stadium this Friday at 6 p.m., taking on Binghamton for Senior Day.
