The eighth-ranked University of Denver men's lacrosse team scored the opening three goals of the fourth quarter to rally past 15th-ranked North Carolina in the second half and gain a 12-10 victory in the debut of the new UNC Lacrosse Stadium before 1,521. Ethan Walker led the Pioneers with four goals while Austin French had a goal and five assists for the Pioneers who improved to 4-1 on the season. Jack Hannah and Colton Jackson each had two goals and an assist for the Pioneers while Ted Sullivan had two goals. UNC was led offensively by William Perry who matched his career high with four goals. He also had four goals against Lehigh on February 17, 2018. Justin Anderson had two goals and an assist for the Tar Heels while freshman Nicky Solomon matched his career high with two goals. Timmy Kelly had a pair of assists for the Tar Heels. North Carolina fell to 3-2 with the loss. The game was the first to be played at the site of the old Fetzer Field which had served as the home of the Tar Heel men's lacrosse team from 1949-2017. UNC had played at Kenan Stadium the past two years while the new lacrosse and soccer stadium was being constructed. The Tar Heels led in most statistical areas but the Pioneers prevailed by scoring 12 goals on thei 19 shots on goal. Overall, UNC led in shots 45-37 and ground balls 38-34. Zachary Tucci had a brilliant game at the face-off X for the Tar Heels, winning 15 of 22 draws. Charles Kelly won two of four face-offs as the Tar Heels finished 17 of 26 at the X. Tucci and Timmy Kelly led UNC with five ground balls each while Ethan Walker, Alex Ready and Brett Boos each had five ground balls for Denver. Denver finished with 18 turnovers and the Tar Heels had 17. The Tar Heel ride was effective as it forced the Pioneers into eight failed clears in 22 attempts while UNC was 11 of 15 in the clearing game. The Tar Heels finished with two extra-man goals while the Pioneers had one. Alex Ready played the entire game in goal for Denver, making 11 saves. Jack Pezzulla started in goal for UNC and made five saves while allowing 11 goals in 49:12. Alex Bassil played the final 10:48 for the Tar Heels and made two saves and allowed one goal while scooping up three ground balls. UNC opened the scoring 43 seconds into the game on a goal by Justin Anderson, assisted by Timmy Kelly. Denver then ran off three goals in a row to go up 3-1 with 5:32 left in the opening period. The Tar Heels would then score five of the last six goals of the first half to go up 6-4 at halftime. The five goals were scored by five different players. Jack Rowlett scored a fast break goal at 2:46 of the opening period before Nicky Solomon notched a man-down goal off an assist by Justin Anderson with 1:18 left in the quarter. Perry scored his first of four goals with 12:38 left in the second quarter before Ethan Walker tied it up for the Pioneers with 4:54 left in the first half. Carolina recorded a pair of unassisted goals before halftime to take a 6-4 lead into the locker room. Justin Anderson scored at 3:08 followed by a goal by Brian Cameron with 10 seconds left in the first half. Denver outscored the Tar Heels 5-3 in the third quarter to tie the game at 9-9 entering the final period. Ted Sullivan scored back-to-back goals for Denver in the opening 2:34 of the third quarter to tie the game at 6-6. A man-up goal by William Perry put the Tar Heels back up with 10:27 left in the third quarter before Denver scored six of the next eight goals in the game to go up 12-9 with 7:10 to play. The two teams were tied at 9-9 entering the final frame before Colton Jackson scored successive unassisted goals at 12:21 and 10:48 to give the Pioneers the lead for good. Ethan Walker added an unassisted goal for Denver at 7:10 before Perry scored a man-up goal, assisted by Andy Matthews, to finish the scoring in the game with 4:36 to play.
