- It was another typical matchup between the Towson University men's lacrosse team and the University of Denver. The two teams battled to a one-goal game for a fourth-straight season, but the visiting Pioneers won 7-6 at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium on Saturday afternoon. No. 7 Towson (5-3) fell in its third-straight game, hindered by turnovers. Luke Fromert finished with three points for the Tigers, scoring once and adding two assists. Timmy Monahan was the lone multiple goal-scorer for Towson. No. 13 Denver (5-2) was led by a three-goal afternoon by Tedy Sullivan, who also logged one assist. Ethan Walker, Colin Rutan and Quinn McKone scored once each. Towson had a ball bounce off a defender and into the goal to account for the seven on the board. How it Happened It was a back-and-forth game throughout as Denver went up 1-0 on McKone's goal at 5:48, answered one minute later by Towson close defenseman Koby Smith in transition. The Pioneers went up 2-1 on the Tiger own goal, which was a shot initially taken by Austin French that was stopped by Tyler Canto. The loose ball flew into the chest of a Tiger defender and bounced into Towson's goal. The Tigers leveled the match for a second time with nine seconds left in the first quarter as Grant Maloof went off-hip on Denver's Alex Ready on a feed from Fromert to make it 2-2 through 15 minutes. Again Denver took a lead on Sullivan's first of the day to make it 3-2 before back-to-back Tiger goals from Fromert and Timmy Monahan gave Towson a 4-3 edge. With three and a half minutes to play in the first half, Denver reknotted the game at 4-4 on Sullivan's second goal of the period. It was the final strike for either side in the first half. Towson's defense continued to stymie the Pioneer offense and held the guests off the board for the entire third quarter. The Tigers scored twice in the third, getting a goal from Brendan Sunday, who extended his point streak to 16 games, followed by Monahan's second of the day at 8:58. Denver surged past Towson in the final quarter, ripping off three-straight goals from Walker, Rutan and Sullivan, who scored with 73 seconds on the clock. Towson had a chance to tie the game late, getting the ball near midfield with 26 seconds left to play, but a mental error led to an offsides call and a change of possession to Denver to finish the game. Behind the Numbers Denver out-shot the Tigers 42-23, including 13 in its come-from-behind fourth quarter. Canto made 11 saves in the game, stopping all four Pioneer shots on goal in the third quarter. Ready stopped eight Towson attempts. The Pioneers edged Towson in ground balls 27-24, while Tiger faceoff specialist Alex Woodall grabbed six off the draw. After going 12-of-17 in the game, Alex Woodall became just the second player in program history to surpass the 500 faceoff wins mark for the Black & Gold. He now how 504 career draws won at Towson, just behind the program's all-time leader Justin Berry, who won 507 for Towson from 1998-01. Clears hurt the Tigers as Towson gained the zone in just 13 of 19 qualifying chances. Denver went 22-of-24 in clearing. Turnovers continued to plague Towson as the Tigers committed 20. Towson had its chances as Denver had 17 miscues as well. There was just one penalty in the game, an interference call against Denver's Colin Squires. The Pioneers successfully killed of the penalty. This marked the fourth-straight meeting between the two teams that was decided by one goal, dating back to Towson's 10-9 win at Denver during the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Up Next for Towson Towson puts its regular season nonconference slate to bed as the Tigers return home next weekend to begin Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action.
