CHAPEL HILL – Thirteen different Tar Heel players scored goals Sunday as the second-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team beat East Carolina 21-3 on a chilly, rainy afternoon at Kenan Memorial Stadium. UNC improved to 3-0 with the win while ECU fell to 2-1. Sophomore Jamie Ortega led UNC with four goals and now has a team-high 15 on the year. Junior Olivia Ferrucci scored a season-high three and the Tar Heels got two each from sophomores Scottie Rose Growney and Ally Mastroianni, and from freshman Amanda Fedor. The Tar Heels also got single goals from Kara Klages, Katie Hoeg, Tayler Warehime, Taylor McDaniels, Ida Farinholt, Charlotte Allard, Amanda Dionne and Riley Harrison. Hoeg led Carolina in assists with five. The game was the second of the weekend for UNC, which beat High Point 13-9 at home on Friday evening. In addition to earning another win, Carolina coach Jenny Levy gave her team a specific challenge going into the ECU matchup, and her players responded. "Our focus was just coming out strong and playing sharp," Levy said. "In the game on Friday night I didn't think we looked sharp and engaged at the level we need to be engaged. So that was our goal to come out and take care of business and be really clean in how we're playing – regardless of our opponent, we need to be able to do that." ECU, with two Carolina alums – head coach Amanda Barnes Moore and assistant Emily Garrity Parros – on the staff, is in its second season of varsity competition and has just two players on the roster who aren't freshmen or sophomores. The difference in experience was apparent from the start, as the Tar Heels scored in the first minute of play (Ortega from Hoeg) and never looked back, leading 15-0 at halftime. All four of Ortega's goals came in the first period, when UNC outshot ECU 26-3. The Pirates' first goal opened the second-half scoring. Hannah Rzempoluch scored on a free position shot then added a second goal six minutes later. ECU got one more on a free position shot with just over two minutes to play. Sophomore Taylor Moreno started in goal for the Tar Heels and made three saves in playing the first 30 minutes. Junior Elise Hennessey played the second half, allowing three goals. Christina White played all 60 minutes in goal for the Pirates with 14 saves, eight of them coming in the second half. The Tar Heels led 45-8 in shots and 19-6 in draw controls. "In general, we're just working on the little nuances and trying to continue to grow and get better," Levy said. "We're cleaning up details that will make a big difference when we get to our next game, which is Maryland." After three home games to start the season, the Tar Heels kick off the road portion of their schedule next weekend in a big way, traveling to College Park to face the Terrapins. That game is set for next Sunday (Feb. 24) at noon. "The Maryland-Carolina rivalry has gone on for 24 years and it's something we really enjoy, and really enjoy playing in," Levy said. "Obviously it's a big challenge to go into College Park to play them, but we're really looking forward to it. Maryland is a great opponent and the game will tell us a little bit more about ourselves at this point in the season."
