The [12/13] University of Denver men's lacrosse team became the first team to qualify for next month's BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship (May 2/4) after a 14-8 win over Providence on Senior Saturday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Denver will clinch at least a share of its sixth-straight BIG EAST regular season crown with a win at Marquette on Friday (8 p.m. CT/7 p.m. MT/FS1/ESPN Denver1600). Regardless of the result next week, Denver will play in the second BIG EAST Semifinal on May 2 at 7 p.m. MT at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Junior Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) led the Pioneers with five points on four goals and a helper. Walker has 20 points and 15 goals in the Pioneers' last four games. The hat trick for Walker was his sixth of the season and the 24th of his three-year Pioneer career. Sophomore Jack Hannah (Milford, Ohio) netted the first hat trick of his career on Saturday, getting four points out of Denver's second midfield with three goals and a helper. Senior Colton Jackson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and sophomore Ted Sullivan (Tucson, Ariz.) had two goals apiece, senior Austin French (Danville, Calif.) had two helpers and classmate Quinn McKone (Novato, Calif.) finished with a goal and a helper on Senior Day. After scoring just three goals in the first 42 games of his career, McKone now has five in the last three games. Freshman Brett Boos (Parker, Colo.) improved to 9-3 in faceoff match-ups this season, going 15-of-23 from the dot and picking up five ground balls. Boos won 10-of-13 faceoffs in the second half, including all four in the third quarter. In his first collegiate start, freshman goalie Cole French (Danville, Calif.) improved to 2-0 on the year making six saves in 56 minutes of action. On the other side of the field, Providence senior goalie Tate Boyce made 18 saves in the loss, but reached 700 saves in his career in the contest. Denver outshot Providence 50-23, including 32-14 on cage. The Pioneers were perfect in the clear on Saturday, while being able to ride back eight possessions on 24 Providence clears. Denver's offense turned the ball over just seven times in the game.
