The No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team suffered its first home loss since March 10, 2012, as No. 14 Florida ended the Terps' 86-game home win streak, 15-14, on Saturday. The Gators' Shannon Kavanaugh scored the game-winning goal with 49.2 seconds left in regulation, her eighth tally of the day to lift Florida. "It stinks to come out on this side of it for sure," said head coach Cathy Reese. "We're so early in the season. We're learning about ourselves. We're learning who we are, what we're capable of and what we need to do better. We will learn from this and improve." Junior Hannah Warther scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 14 with eight minutes left in the game. Warther finished with a team-best and career-high six points on four goals and two assists to go with a career-best four groundballs. Senior Kali Hartshorn netted a hat trick and added a helper for four points. Freshman Shaylan Ahearn also had four points with two goals and two assists. The May sisters combined for four goals, two apiece for Catie and Libby. It was a back and forth affair from the beginning, with no team leading by more than two goals the whole game. Hartshorn scored for the Terps right away to start it before Maryland and Florida traded goals until the Gators took a 6-4 lead. Hartshorn, senior Brindi Griffin and Warther put Maryland up 8-7 off a 3-0 run. With the game tied 8-8 at halftime, Ahearn scored two goals out of the break. Florida led 14-12 with 13 minutes left before Warther's two goals to tie it. Maryland was held scoreless for the last eight minutes of the game as Florida netted the winner with 49 seconds left. Maryland's 86-game home winning streak was the longest in division one sports and the longest in program history. The Terps' last home loss came to Syracuse, 10-9, nearly eight years ago. Under Cathy Reese, the Terps are now 143-3 at home. The Terps return to action next Saturday, Feb. 22 at No. 2 North Carolina in Chapel Hill at 1 p.m.
