The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but the No. 12 Virginia Cavaliers dominated from then on to take a commanding 19-5 win on Thursday afternoon at Robins Stadium. Marissa Brown started the scoring in the third minute before she assisted Mia Castagnero for the 2-0 lead under a minute later. After the Cavaliers scored to cut the lead in half, Brown tallied her second goal to make it 3-1. From there, Virginia went on a six-goal run to close the half and take a 7-3 lead into the locker room. After Madison Ostrick scored her first goal of the season in the opening minute, the Cavalier offense dominated again, scoring 12 goals in a row to go up 19-4. Spider rookie Evelyn Roberts closed the game's scoring, tacking on an unassisted score with six minutes to play for her first career goal. Megan Gianforte and Danni LeServe combined for 11 saves in goal, while Julie Ball caused a game-high five turnovers and collected a game-high five ground balls. Ostrick lead all players with seven draw controls on the day. The Spiders return to action on Saturday, February 23, when they host American in the second game of a Richmond Lacrosse double-header at Robins Stadium. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
