• Score: #23 Johns Hopkins-13, #9 Loyola-11
• Records: JHU (2-0) • LU (0-1)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team got a game and career-best four goals from sophomore Shelby Harrison in a 13-11 win over ninth-ranked Loyola at Homewood Field Saturday.
How it Happened
• Loyola jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the game's first 12 minutes, fueled by a pair of Hannah Power goals. Harrison made it a two-goal game when she blew a shot past Kady Glynn from eight yards out. That goal sparked an 8-2 Hopkins' run that spanned the final 17:10 of the first half. Just 74 seconds later, junior Mackenzie Heldberg spun on her defender and went top shelf from in-tight to cut the deficit to one at 5-4.
• Junior Maggie Schneidereith tied the game with 11:39 to go in the half with a shot to the far post. However, the Greyhounds answered with back-to-back goals by Livy Rosenzweig and Sam Fiedler, in a 41-second span, to go up 7-5.
• Once again it was Harrison to jump start the offense when she scored on a high-to-low shot off the dodge at 7:25. Sophomore Aurora Cordingley then sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from Schneidereith and it was 9-7 Hopkins. Harrison closed out the first-half scoring with a free position goal to send the Blue Jays into the break with a three-goal lead.
• The Greyhounds struck first to open the second half as Emily Beier found Elli Kluegel alone on the left post for the score. Schneidereith answered with a free position goal to stake Hopkins to an 11-8 lead with 28:27 to go. Powers and Kluegel responded with consecutive goals to pull Loyola back within one less than three minutes later.
• The Blue Jays pushed their lead back to two when Schneidereith found a cutting Cordingley, who scored on a bouncer with 23:31 to go. Fielder would once again make it a one-goal game as she cashed in on a free position shot. Two and a half minutes later, Harrison converted one of her own and Hopkins led 13-11 with 15:29 to play. As it turned out, that was the final goal of the game as both defenses stood their ground.
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 5-13 all-time against Loyola and has won three straight and five of the last seven.
• It is the Blue Jays' first win over a top-10 team since a 16-11 win over 10th-ranked Penn State on March 25, 2017.
