KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women's lacrosse team exploded for 22 goals, the fifth most in single-game history, to defeat Presbyterian 22-11 Saturday afternoon and return to .500 on the year. 10 Owls found the back of the net against the Blue Hose. Siena Gore led the attack netting six goals followed by Izzy Palermo with four and Emily Napierala with three, both tying their career-highs. How it Happened: Siena Gore opened the scoring for KSU (2-2) with a goal less than a minute into the game to mark her 150th career goal. Presbyterian (2-3) answered with back-to-back goals in less than a minute to retake the lead. The two teams felt each other out, trading goals over the next few minutes deadlocked at 5-5 with 11 minutes left to play. The Owls then seized control as another goal from Siena Gore opened a 6-0 run to close out the half. Five Owls, Siena and Marissa Gore, Jaxsyn Schonewille, Abby Squires and Palermo, all recorded goals to help give KSU an 11-5 lead at halftime. KSU out-drew Presbyterian 14-3 in the opening period, recording 20 shots to PC's nine. The Owls kept their momentum rolling in the second half as Anna Giulitto netted a goal two minutes in. That was followed up by goals from Palermo, Napierala and Siena Gore to give KSU its first 10-goal lead of the game, 15-5, at the 24:15 mark. Both teams went back-and-forth as PC attempted to keep the lead within single-digits, but a quick 3-0 swing capped off by freshman Abbey Behn's first career goal kept KSU in the driver's seat, 21-9, with less than 10 minutes left to play. The Blue Hose recorded two more goals in the half, but freshman Zoe King managed to net her first career goal just before the final buzzer to earn the final score of 22-11. Notes: Siena Gore recorded six goals to mark the second time this season, fifth of her career, she has scored six or more goals … Siena is the first Owl in program history to record over 150 career goals … Siena logged a career-high 11 draw controls against PC, a mark that stands at No. 2 in KSU single-game history … as a team the Owls out-drew PC 24-10 to mark the 10th time in program history KSU has recorded 20 or more draw controls … Emily Napierala tied her career-high with five points, adding two assists to her three goals … the Owls totaled 19 ground balls … Marissa Gore recorded four ground balls to tie her career-high followed by Maura Palandro and Anna Giulitto with three a piece … KSU out-shot PC 43-19. Quotes: Head Coach Laura Maness On the back-and-forth start… "One of the things that we talked with the team about is that we were in it for 60 minutes. We thought we had better depth than Presbyterian so we did want to push tempo a bit and sometimes that means that they might be able to answer back and they did in the first 10 minutes or so, but then we were able to break away. So, we stuck to that game plan knowing that it would ultimately wear them down and we would get better looks as we continued throughout the game. We anticipated that was something that could happen, and we didn't let that get into our heads." On the freshmen's performances… "Our freshman class is really strong and they work hard in practice every single day so one thing we talked to them about after Florida was coming into this game with more confidence. And we saw them do just that. When they went in off the bench it was a burst of energy, Abbey Behn and Zoe King were both able to get their first goals so that was really good, and we want that energy coming from the bench and that is really important as they get experience." Up Next: The Owls now turn their attention to in-state rival Mercer, hosting the Bears next Wednesday (Mar. 4) at 5 p.m.
