The UMBC women's lacrosse team opened the 2020 season on Tuesday night, falling to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, 17-11, in front of 285 fans at UMBC Stadium. FOR THE RECORD Lehigh moves to 2-0 on the season while UMBC falls to 0-1. STRAIGHT FACTS The Mountain Hawks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before junior Courtney Renehan (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg/Maryland) scored the first goal for the Retrievers at the 22:51 mark, off a pass from freshman Shannon Finch (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll). Lehigh went up 4-1, but Renehan and junior Olivia Docal (Glenwood, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) cut the deficit to 4-3 with 21:04 to play. After the Mountain Hawks responded with two goals, Renehan added her third of the day to bring the score to 6-4 with 14:08 to play in the first half. However, Lehigh closed out the period on a four-goal run to take a 10-4 lead into halftime. 20 seconds into the second half, freshman Claire Bockstie (Forest Hill, Md./Maryvale Prepatory) scored her first career goal; almost three minutes late, classmates Megan Halczuk (Fawn Grove, Pa.) and Rachel Montgomery (West Friendship, Md./Glenelg) teamed up to help put UMBC within four, 10-6. Lehigh got a goal back before Bockstie scored her second of the game on a free-position shot to make the score 11-7 with 21:15 to play. The Mountain Hawks scored three-straight to take a seven-goal lead, 14-7, but Bockstie and Renehan cut the run to cut the deficit to five, 14-9, with 11:14 to play. Senior Zoe Pekins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) and junior Lily Kennedy (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) scored the last two goals for UMBC in the middle of three goals from Lehigh for the 17-11 final.
