The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team opened its 2020 season Sunday at home with the Bearcats falling to visiting Louisville, 16-11, at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats, who saw their season opener postponed Friday after snow fell in Kent, Ohio, fall to 0-1 on the year while the Cardinals moved to 1-0. // QUICK NOTES • Cincinnati fell 0-1 on the young year while Louisville moved to 1-0 • The Bearcats are still in search of their first win in the all-time series, trailing, 13-0, to the Cardinals • UC started four freshmen today, including Gianna Pope (goalie), Kenna Hancock, Dani Mlkvy and Peyton Mottice • Four other rookies saw their first collegiate action as well, including Tori Accardo, Sophia Finotti, Morgan Bates and Anna Green • For the rookies, Mottice scored her first goal and added her first assist while Hancock tallied two assists for her first points • Mlkvy had a strong debut defensively as well as she tallied a team-high six ground balls, won four draw controls and posted five caused turnovers, which ties for the fourth-most in a single game in UC history • Amanda Fess scored a pair of goals, marking the first time the senior has tallied multiple goals in a single game at UC • Haley Brady recorded her first collegiate goal after not scoring on three shot attempts last year // HOW IT HAPPENED UC got off to a fat start as Kylie Nause netted a goal on the team's first possession with Kate Carney assisting, but UL went on a 4-0 run to take the lead, one they would not relinquish. Monica Borzillo halted the run with a free-position goal before UL added two more to make it 6-2. Brady scored her first UC goal on Hancock's first collegiate assist to stop the run once again, but the Cardinals would add two more. Mottice got her first collegiate point as she scored on a free-position attempt to make it 8-4 in favor of the visitors at halftime. In the second half, UL came out strong and scored the first four goals for a 12-4 lead before both teams traded a pair of goals. For the Bearcats, Gianna Napoletano scored on a free-position and Taylor Gysin netted on a pass from Hancock to make it 12-6. UL scored two more in row to push its advantage to 14-6 before Gysin scored her second to make 14-7. After another UL goal, Amanda Fess scored back-to-back goals for UC and Carney added her first on a pass from Fess as UC closed it to 15-10. In the end, however, both teams traded goals with Napoletano scoring her second to end the scoring and UC falling by five. // MIGHTY MLKVY A Mlkvy had a strong day doing the little things for the Bearcats, but this time, it was Dani Mlkvy doing the work her older sister Sam Mlkvy is accustomed. The freshman earned her first career start and posted solid numbers as she tallied six ground balls, four draw controls and five caused turnovers, all of which were team-highs for the game. Additionally, her five caused turnovers tied for the fourth-most in a single game in program history with three other Bearcats having recorded six to set the standard. // FIRST TIMES Of the eight rookies that saw their first collegiate action Sunday, two tallied their first points, including Hancock and Mottice. Hancock was credited with two points on two assists while Mottice scored one goal and added one helper for her two points. Mottice also tied for the team lead with four draw controls. Additionally, sophomore Brady scored her first career goal as well // FESS FIRING Late in the game, Amanda Fess caught fire as she scored back-to-back goals and added an assist on the next UC score. Her three points bettered her career-high that was previously two points at Louisville in 2017. Fess also scored multiple goals in the same game for the first time in her four-year career with the Bearcats. // NEXT UP The Bearcats hit the road Friday where they will look to show no love to Marquette in a Valentine's Day matinee in Milwaukee, Wis. The two teams are scheduled to meet in a 1 p.m. CT (2 p.m. ET) game on the Eagles' campus.
