The Barton men's lacrosse team (0-1) made history on Saturday by playing its first game ever but fell to Lincoln Memorial University (1-0) in an extremely close contest, 14-13, at Cardinal Gibbons High School. The Bulldogs, under Warren Shumate, were led by freshman attacker Mason Chaney (Dunkirk, Md.) with six goals in addition to two assists while both sophomore attacker Jake Soroko (Smyrna, Del.) and sophomore midfielder Jake Copio (Smyrna, Del.) added two scores each in the setback. Lincoln Memorial was led by Robert Tucker (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Reggie Golfin (Detroit, Mich.) with five and four goals, respectively, in the back-and-fourth affair. The Railsplitters scored the final two goals to take the contest including the game-winner by Golfin with 3:15 left in the contest. Just prior, Barton had rallied with three straight goals of its own. The Bulldogs had several chances in the end but the Railsplitters were able to hold on for the victory. Lincoln Memorial held a 38-34 edge in shots taken while Trenton Cameron (Barnstable, Mass.) picked up the win in goal after making seven saves. For Barton, freshman goalkeeper Matt Stocks (Endicott, N.Y.) suffered the loss despite stopping eight shots. Barton returns to the field on Saturday, February 9, against Newberry in Newberry, S.C., beginning at 3:00 p.m., while Lincoln Memorial faces Shorter in Rome, Ga., on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
