Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team remained undefeated on the season with a 14-11 victory over visiting Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field. The Hoyas (2-0) never led until 7:36 remaining in the fourth quarter before outscoring the Colonials (0-2) 4-1 down the final stretch. Daniel Bucaro (East Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville) and Jake Carraway (Annapolis, Md. / St. Mary's) both led the Hoyas with six points each. Bucaro tallied four goals and two assists while Carraway notched three goals and three assists. Carraway's first assist in the opening frame gave the junior 100 career points, making him the 25th member of the 100-Point Club in program history. Lucas Wittenberg (Kennesaw, Ga. / Harrison / Mercer) added four points (3G, 1A), Massimo Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y. / IMG Academy) had a career-high three points (1G, 2A) while Patrick Aslanian (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield), Robert Clark (Cooksville, Md. / McDonogh) and Dylan Watson (Guelph, Ontario / The Hill Academy) all added lone goals. Defensively, Owen McElroy (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood [Avon Old Farms]) earned his second-straight win between the pipes with a 15-save performance. He added a pair of ground balls and was credited with an assist on Aslanian's coast-to-coast breakaway goal. Aslanian had a stellar performance on the day in the defensive midfield, earning five caused turnovers while collecting six ground balls to go with his goal. His five CTs are the most in a game for a Hoya since 2017 and only the second time to happen since 2014. The close defense unit of Gibson Smith (Pelham, N.Y. / Pelham Memorial), Stephen MacLeod (San Francisco, Calif. / St. Ignatius) and Alex Mazzone (Stony Brook, N.Y. / Ward Melville) combined for five caused turnovers as well with Smith and Mazzone both logging a pair. Smith led all GU players with seven ground balls. A combined 10 goals highlighted the opening frame as RMU took an early 3-1 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Back-to-back goals from Carraway and Clark knotted things up at 3-3 and both teams would trade goals again to see a 4-4 tie with just over three minutes to play in the period. The Colonials would then score consecutive goals, including one with 1.2 seconds on the clock, to take a 6-4 lead after the opening 15 minutes of action. In a tale of two quarters, the second stanza was a decidedly low scoring affair with just one shot finding the back of the net. McElroy hauled in a save with under 30 seconds remaining in the half and quickly launched an outlet pass to Aslanian streaking down the field. Unmarked, Aslanian had no traffic as he raced unfettered the length of the field to beat the Colonial goalie one-on-one for his first goal of the season. The goal pulled the Hoyas within one at the break, trailing 6-5. Coming out of halftime, both team traded goals back and forth through the first five minutes of play, capped by a Wittenberg goal from a Bucci helper, to make it 8-7 in favor of the visitors. Clamping down, Georgetown would even the score at 9-9 to close out the frame on another Bucaro goal. Tied at 9-9 with one final period to play, Robert Morris struck first at the 12:26 mark to take another one-goal lead at 10-9. The Hoyas responded with three-straight goals by Bucci, Carraway and Bucaro to take their first lead of the game at the 7:36 mark, one they would not relinquish. A man-up goal from the Colonials on a two-man EMO with 2:48 made it a 12-11 game, but Wittenberg gave the Blue & Gray a two-goal cushion with his hat-trick with 1:37 remaining and Bucaro put the nail in the coffin with a man-up goal with just 38 ticks remaining. Ryan Smith led Robert Morris with four points (3G, 1A). Trey Arnold won 18-of-28 trips to the faceoff 'X' and led all players with 12 ground balls. In goal, Alex Heger collected 13 saves in the loss. Georgetown continues its season opening homestand as it hosts No. 10/7 Towson on the Hilltop next Saturday, Feb. 23 at noon.
