MACON, Ga. – The Bears weren't fooling around as they rallied from a three-goal deficit with less than three minutes remaining to send the game to overtime as the Mercer's men's lacrosse team grabbed a 13-12 win over High Point on Saturday afternoon. Mercer picked up its first Southern Conference win of the year and moved to 4-5 overall.
Chris Rahill led Mercer with a career-high seven points off three goals and four assists, while Matt Quinn tallied a season-high three goals, including the game-winner, and an assist.
HOW IT HAPPENED
High Point got on the board first, scoring in the first 11 seconds of the game, but Mercer answered a few minutes later to tie it up, 1-1. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Bears added a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the period as Jake Nelson and Lucas Wittenberg scored 17 seconds apart to put Mercer up 3-2. High Point knotted the score again to start the second quarter, but Quinn scored his first goal of the day to put Mercer back up, 4-3. The Panthers scored a pair of goals but Rahill found the back of the net to tie the game, 5-5, before the teams went to halftime.
Mercer scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second half and High Point added one as Mercer had a 7-6 advantage. The Panthers closed out the period with four unanswered goals as they took a 10-7 lead entering the final 15 minutes of regulation. The teams traded goals for the first 10 minutes of the fourth quarter, each scoring two, as High Point maintained its three-goal lead, 12-9. With 2:10 on the clock, Kevin Yoggy scored off an assist from Wittenberg to spark Mercer's comeback. Quinn added a goal with 1:29 remaining to cut High Point's lead to 12-11 and Shawn Carter tied the game 12-12 with 38 seconds left to play.
The Bears won the ensuing faceoff and Rahill looked to score the game-winner with just three seconds remaining, but the goal was called off, sending the game to overtime. Mercer also won the faceoff to start overtime and after receiving a shot clock warning, Quinn fired a shot that sailed past High Point's goalie and gave the Bears their first SoCon win of the season.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Chris Rahill tallied a career-high seven points while tying his career highs of three goals and four assists.
STAT OF THE GAME
Aided by Kiel Brennan's 19-for-25 performance at the faceoff X, Mercer was 20-for-29 on the day, tying the team's season high for faceoff wins.
COACH HANNAN'S TAKE
"It was just a great DI lacrosse game against a great SoCon rival. Mercer and High Point are always in good games, whether it's at their place or our place. I think the thing we take as a team and coaches is we can come together and finish games whether we're down three in the fourth quarter or not, we're alive because we're a talented enough team to be there. Being down three with four minutes to go, that's a tough game to win. We won a lot of faceoffs, had possessions, won in ground balls 9-3 in the fourth quarter and made plays when we had to."
