LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior attackman Zach Danneman totaled nine goals and one assist to lead the Southern Virginia men's lacrosse team to a 17-12 victory over 18th-ranked Washington and Lee on Wednesday evening at Knight Stadium. A pair of Danneman goals in the opening 4:57 of the game gave SVU an early 2-0 advantage, but the Generals (1-1) responded with a six-goal run to assume a 6-2 lead with 2:26 left in the opening period. Senior attackman Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal) scored twice during the stretch, while senior midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) totaled one goal and one assist. The game turned from that point on however, as the Knights (2-5) scored seven of the game's next eight goals to take a 9-7 lead with 12:34 left in the third period. Danneman scored four goals and assisted on another during the SVU surge. W&L scored three straight, including a pair of tallies by sophomore attackman Will Schnorr (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) to re-assume the lead at 10-9 with 9:35 remaining in the third quarter. However, Southern Virginia refused to give in, scoring four in a row, including two by junior midfielder Ty Veres, to take a 13-10 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Generals received goals from Mulholland at 12:17 of the fourth and sophomore midfielder Henry Holliday (Washington, D.C. / St. Albans) just over three minutes later to climb within one goal (13-12) with 8:59 remaining, but that would be as close as W&L would come to pulling even. The Knights closed the game out with four goals in the final 5:25 to pull off the win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Each team took 50 shots in the game, while the Knights claimed a 41-25 advantage on ground balls. Each team won 16 faceoffs. Greenspon led W&L with three goals and one assist, while Holliday tallied a career-best four points on a career-high three goals and one assist. Mulholland and Schnorr totaled two goals and one assist each. Senior Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) played all 60 minutes in goal and notched nine saves. Danneman's nine points led the way for SVU. Veres scored four goals and sophomore midfielder Eric Norr added three goals. Senior Dalon Hampshire also played all 60 minutes in goal and posted 13 stops. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Roanoke College for a 1:00 pm matchup with the Maroons.
