Facing the defending South Region Champions on a neutral field, the nationally sixth-ranked Limestone College men's lacrosse team used a dominant 11-1 stretch that spanned three quarters to upend No. 9 Saint Leo University, 18-7, on Sunday, February 17 at Daffin Park. Sundown answered for the Saints a couple moments later, finishing off an assist from sophomore Cody Solmosy (Farmingville, N.Y.) to cut the lead to one. Saint Leo doubled up the Blue and Gold, 4-2, at the 2:50-mark, but Papa buried his second goal of the opening quarter to pull Limestone to within 4-3 at the end of the first. That score would spark a 9-0 run for the Saints over the next 20 minutes of game play – a scoring run that would stretch into the third quarter. Second Quarter It was all Limestone in the second quarter as the visitors won all six faceoff attempts and outgunned the Lions 14-7 during the decisive 15-minute stretch. Huyghue posted his first score of the day, tying the contest at 4-all with 12:30 remaining, before assisting on the go-ahead score by Bennett a few ticks later. Huyghue continued to have his way in the frame, scoring back-to-back goals to stake the Saints to a 7-4 advantage with 3:57 left in the first half. He then dished out his second assist of the period, setting up a goal by Sundown as the Blue and Gold built up an 8-4 lead heading into the locker room. Third Quarter Limestone kept the scoring run going in the third as goals by Walter, Bennett and Hommel over the first three minutes of play made it an 11-4 game. Saint Leo briefly halted the momentum, but scores from senior Coltin Moseman (Malta, N.Y.) and Walter put the Saints in front by a comfortable margin, 13-5. Fourth Quarter Trailing by eight entering the final period, the Lions cut the lead in half, 14-7, with a goal a few moments into the fourth. However, the Blue and Gold put to rest any thoughts of a comeback as the Saints closed out the contest with four unanswered goals, including a pair of man-up scores in the closing minutes. Sundown finished off a feed from Bennett, capitalizing on an extra-man try, before freshman Nathaniel Carter (Martinsburg, W.Va.) split the cage for his first career goal. Senior Jeremy Burns (Fort Mitchell, Ky.) then added his only score before Huyghue capped the scoring with a man-up goal late in regulation. TURNING POINT Limestone fell behind 4-2 late in the opening quarter, but a 9-0 run over a 20-minute span would put the Blue and Gold in control early in the third. Although Saint Leo ended the overall run with a pair of goals in the third, the Saints outscored the Lions 4-1 in the final period to pull away for an 18-7 win.
