Led by a game-high six points from senior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and 13 saves from senior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College), the No. 8/9 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 13-10 victory over ECC foe No. 5 LIU Post in a CODA Awareness Game on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Mavericks (14-1, 5-0 ECC) secure the program's first-ever ECC Regular Season Championship and defeat the Pioneers (10-3, 5-1 ECC) for just the second time in program history. Mercy has also secured the top seed in the ECC Tournament for the first time in program history and will host an ECC Semifinal matchup on Wednesday, May 1st. Chillianis had two goals and a game-high four assists. Senior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) had three goals and two assists, recording his 100th career assist. Sophomore Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had three goals and an assist and freshman Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had two goals and three assists. Freshman Joe Poggio (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had two goals and junior Anthony DeVito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) also scored. Senior Eric Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./Nassau CC) had an assist and freshman Jack Kipnes (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) had a game-high six caused turnovers with four ground balls. Senior Anthony DeCeglia (Northport, N.Y./Nassau CC) had four caused turnovers with three ground balls. Gibbons made 13 saves to post the win. LIU Post was led by William Snelders who had a team-high four points on three goals and an assist. Bryan Ochs made nine saves to take the loss. The Pioneers got on the board first at the 12:55 mark following a Snelders goal. The Mavericks answered with three straight goals from Gibbons, Chillianis and Poggio to take a 3-1 lead with 7:26 left in the first quarter. LIU Post tied the game up at 3-3 following two straight goals from Snelders and Thomas Liantonio. Scorcia gave the lead back to Mercy at the 1:47 mark before Jake Gillis closed the period out with a goal to make it 4-4 after the opening quarter. The Mavericks scored the first four goals of the second quarter to build an 8-4 lead. Chillianis, MacSpadyen, DeVito and Scorcia all scored to put Mercy up four with 2:33 remaining in the half. Frank Ranfone scored for the Pioneers with 1:01 on the clock to send Mercy into halftime up three, 8-5. Gibbons and Scorcia started the third quarter with back-to-back goals to put the Mavericks up five, 10-5, with 8:48 left in the frame. Snelders and Poggio scored to bring the score to 11-6 at the 5:27 mark. LIU Post ended the third quarter with three straight goals to make it 11-9 after the third quarter. Despite the Pioneers having momentum on their side, the Mavericks increased the lead back to three when MacSpadyen scored with 12:07 remaining in the fourth to make it 12-9. Mike Kadnar made it 12-10, but MacSpadyen increased the lead back to three, 13-10, with his third of the game at the 8:07 mark. The Mercy defense held LIU Post scoreless for the final 11:22 and Gibbons made five saves in the fourth quarter to give the Mavericks the win. LIU Post held a 45-32 edge in shots, a 40-29 edge in ground balls and went 20-of-25 on faceoffs. Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 25th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 3 p.m.
