Seventh-ranked York College ended the game with a five-goal run to secure a 13-9 victory over 12th-ranked Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse action on Saturday at Wilson Field. York (1-0) held a slim 5-4 lead at the halftime break, but opened the third period with a pair of goals in the first 2:57 to push out to a 7-4 lead at the 12:03 mark. However, the Generals (0-1) responded with four straight tallies to assume their first lead of the contest (8-7) at the 5:02 mark of the third quarter. Four different players scored the four goals for W&L, with junior attackman Stuart Greenspon (Aldie, Va. / Episcopal) and senior midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) notching the final two tallies just 30 seconds apart. Each team scored once more to make it 9-8 W&L with 2:19 left in the third, but the Spartans seized the momentum with a game-tying score with just 11 seconds left in the period. The goal by junior attackman Chandler Schmidt was followed by two more from junior midfielder Dylan Wolf to start the fourth period, and the Spartans pulled away for their sixth straight win over the Generals. York held a 49-35 advantage in shots and a 29-23 edge in ground balls. W&L won 15 of the 24 faceoffs in the contest. Junior attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) paced the Generals' offense with three goals. First-year attackman Will Schnorr (Paoli, Pa. / Conestoga) tallied two goals, while Greenspon, Hamill and senior midfielder Nicholas Rodman (Atlanta, Ga. / North Atlanta) each found the net once. Senior midfielder Jack Hodgson (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) won 15-of-22 faceoffs and junior Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) played all 90 minutes in goal, recording 12 saves. Wolf led York with three goals and three assists, while Schmidt scored three markers. Senior midfielder Gunnar Reynolds added two goals and two assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Michael posted 11 saves while playing the duration between the pipes. Washington and Lee returns to action next Sunday, when it hosts ninth-ranked Denison for a 12:00 pm contest.
