The upset bid of nationally ranked No. 1 and defending national champions Merrimack fell just short as Lake Erie dropped a 16-13 contest at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium on a chilly Sunday afternoon. The Storm (0-2) held a lead at halftime, but the Warriors (2-0) scored seven unanswered goals to regain momentum. Six of those goals came in the third quarter to give the Warriors, who are playing their final season in Division II before moving up to Division I, a 14-9 advantage. The Storm attempted to rally back with a no-look goal by Bret Swan off the faceoff followed by Micah Daigle's score on the assist from Tim Bay, but Lake Erie could get no closer than three the rest of the way. A four-goal run near the end of the second quarter gave Lake Erie a 9-7 lead, its largest of the game. Matt Cromie initiated the rally with a score on the assist by Kyle Barna. Brandon Sheedy followed just over a minute later on an assist from Patrick Bay. Barna then added two of his own on helpers from Tim and Patrick Bay. Barna finished with six points on four goals and two assists. Tim Bay finished with four on two goals and two assists. Cromie and Daigle also had multiple goal games. Merrimack's Charlie Bertrand proved difficult to stop as he was involved on 10 of the Warriors' goals. He was responsible for seven of them and assisted on three others. Sean Black added three goals and two assists for the visitors as well. The Storm will now travel northeast for their first road contest of the year. That will come Wednesday when Lake Erie takes on Roberts Wesleyan. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. in Rochester, New York.
