– Offensive spurt by Montevallo too much for Newberry as they fall 13-8 at Setzler Field in nonconference men's lacrosse action. The Wolves (6-2, 0-1 SAC) were looking for redemption from a year ago as they faced the Falcons in their first game as a program but came up short. Dylan Mansur lead the Newberry attack once again, adding three more goals to extend his hat-trick streak to six games. Brady Kearnan got back on track with two goals as Justin Walsh, Stone Boone and Jeremy Ross added the others. Mansur, Kearnan, Justin Messersmith and Neil Swingruber each had one assists for the Wolves. Montevallo got off to a quick start, scoring the games first two goals to go up 2-0 in just under a minute of action. Ross was able to halt the run as he found the net shortly after. Newberry was able to even the playing field with Mansur finding Walsh for the goal to make it 2-2 with 10:03 left in the first frame. Boone was able to get the lead for the Wolves just :47 seconds later to get the 3-2 advantage. The Falcons were able to tighten up their defense in the second quarter as they held the Wolves scoreless. Montevallo was able to find the net two times in the frame to take a 4-3 lead going into halftime. Jackson Neufeld pushed Montevallo's lead to two goals early in the third before Mansur was able to bring the deficit back to one goal. The Falcons grew their lead in the third to four goals until Mansur scored his final goal to make it 8-5 with 3:45 left in the third quarter. Each team were able to tack on one goal to make it 9-6 going into the final frame. Montevallo was able to add four more goals in the fourth quarter to Newberry's two goals. In the second half, Newberry was outscored 9-5. Gregory Gerber Jr. lead the defense for Newberry, grabbing six ground balls while Kearnan and Jared Chant added four apiece. Alec Fletch had three ground balls with four players added two ground balls each. Fletcher, Boone and Dan Sullivan created extra opportunities for the Wolves as they had two caused turnovers each. Erick Szurley earned the loss in net, making nine saves on 19 shots faced in 45:42 of action. Colton Clingan went the rest of the way in net, making three saves on six shots faced. The Wolves will be back in action next Wednesday as they travel to Hartville to take on Coker at 7 p.m. in conference action.
