Newebrry men's lacrosse team rewrites the conference record book in 19-4 route of Shorter Wednesday evening at Setzler Field. Forward Brady Kearnan broke the record of goals (8) scored in a game for Newberry, previously held by Kearnan, and broke the South Atlantic Conference record for goals in a game which was previously held by Garrett Kilgore of Coker. Midfielder Justin Messersmith had another stellar game in the faceoff circle, winning 22-of-24 faceoffs attempted. Messersmith also set a new school record in groundballs with 18. His 18 groundballs is good for second in conference history. The Wolves (2-0, 0-0 SAC) had another great game on the offensive side of the ball as attackman Dylan Mansur had five points (four goals, one assists) and midfielder Jeremy Ross with four points (one goal, three assists). Attackman Stone Boone and midfielder Belton Bryan added three points (two goals, one assist) each while midfielders Daytin Vidovich and Neil Swingruber added two points each (one goal, one assist). Midfielders Kyle Dunklee and Zachary Sunderland had one assist, respectively. Newberry started hot, with Kearnan scoring two goals in the first three minutes of action. Shorter answered as Chris Woodard got the Hawks in the scoring column at the 7:42 mark. Kearnan added his third goal with just over a minute left in to close out the frame with a 3-1 lead. The Hawks were able to cut the deficit to one with another Woodard goal. The Wolves answered with four goals with Kearnan scoring two while Mansur and Belton added the other two to take a 7-2 halftime advantage. The Wolves came out firing in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 9-1. Mansur added three goals in the frame while Vidovich got his first on the year. Newberry tacked on three more goals in the final frame, including two form Kearnan. To go along with Messersmith's 18 groundballs, Boone added eight groundballs while Dunklee and Dan Sullivan had five each. Goalkeeper Erick Szurley had four groundballs while four players had three groundballs, respectively. As a team, the Wolves grabbed 68 loose balls, shattering the previous conference record for team groundballs set by Tusculum who had 55. Defender Dan Sullivan set a new school record in caused turnovers with five while defenders Zachary Payne and Austen Cooke added three each. Szurley got the win in net, making seven saves on ten shots face in 54 minutes of action. Colton Clingan came in for the remainder of the game, making four saves on five shots faced. Richard Ticer earned the loss for the Hawks, making 26 saves on 47 shots faced. The Wolves had 78 shots on the night. Newberry will be back in action this Saturday as the travel to Chowan with a 2 p.m. start time.
