The NYIT men's lacrosse team produced a dominating third quarter to nearly pull even with Tampa on Saturday.
However, NYIT ultimately fell to the Spartans, 16-12, at President's Stadium.
The Bears dropped to 2-8 overall.
NYIT had stormed back from a six-goal deficit, pulling to within 12-11 on a goal from Joseph Duchnowski at the buzzer that ended the third quarter.
Tampa then scored the opening three goals of the fourth quarter to restore a cushion.
Michael Trainor led NYIT with four goals. Duchnowski and Lenny Innamorato followed with three goals apiece.
NYIT's challenging schedule continues with a home game on Wednesday at 5 p.m. against top-ranked Adelphi. No. 3 Mercy and No. 5 LIU Post then follow to open the East Coast Conference schedule.
