Jack Mulcahy scored with just 11 seconds left on the clock as Drexel came from behind to defeat Towson 12-11, in the regular-season finale for both teams. Drexel trailed by four goals late in the third quarter but scored six times in the fourth quarter to win its seventh-straight game. The Dragons (8-2, 6-2 CAA) trailed 9-5 before mounting their comeback. It started with a fluke goal as Brent McVicker appeared to send a pass in to Reid Bowering. The ball was tipped, took a strange bounce and crossed the goal line, making it a 9-6 game with 33 seconds left in the third. That started a 6-1 Drexel run. Bowering scored the first two goals to open the fourth quarter. The first was on the man-up, while the second was a touch angled missile that Bowering placed in the upper left corner. Towson's James Avanzato quelled the momentum for a moment with a transition goal with 8:49 to play. However, the Dragons scored three straight, including a pair by freshman Luke Tomak, the second which gave Drexel its first lead of the game at 11-10. Towson (6-8, 3-5 CAA) evened it up when Carson Gaeger's left-handed shot on the run beat Ross Blumenthal with three minutes to play. After a Drexel timeout in the final minute, the Dragons deliberately set up their final play. Mulcahy came out from behind the net and his shot beat Shane Brennan to give the Dragons the come-back victory. It was Mulcahy's third of the game and gave Drexel a sweep of their CAA rival. The win also ended the Tigers' season. Bowering had another had trick in the win. The graduate student now has 136 goals in his career at DU. He also has 172 points, which moved him past Ira Peezick into seventh place all-time at the school. Jimmeh Koita won 14 of his 26 face-offs and led the Dragons with six ground balls. Blumenthal had 11 saves, six which came during the first quarter. Drexel outshot the Tigers, 51-42. The Tigers took the lead with just 15 seconds left in the first quarter when Andrew Milani scored to make it 2-1. Early in the second, Brody McLean extended the lead to 3-1 when he converted a pass from Avanzato. The Dragons trimmed the lead to one on the man-up. Ryan Genord found Bowering on the crease and he deposited it in the Tigers' goal, making it 3-2. Towson then closed the half with three straight goals to take a 6-2 lead at the half. The Dragons outshot the Tigers, 23-22, in the opening 30 minutes but were able to score just twice and hit the post on two occasions. Avanzato scored three times and handed out two assists to lead the Tigers. Jake McLean added a pair of goals, while Brody McLean had a goal and two assists. Brennan made 14 saves in the cage. Drexel will begin play in the CAA Championships on the campus of Hofstra University on Thursday. The Dragons will play either UMass or Hofstra in the semifinals beginning at 7 p.m.
