In the world of lacrosse attackmen, Corey Rich falls more into the "tank" variety. Rather than trying to find open space, Rich usually prefers to lean on defenders, or better yet, to bounce off of them and shoot, often while he's on his way to the ground. He had it all working on Saturday at New Paltz. After breaking the Bard program record for career points in the first half, Rich's sixth goal of the game gave Bard a thrilling 12-11 overtime win over SUNY New Paltz, the Raptors' first win of 2020. It wasn't easy. Bard outshot New Paltz 13-8 in the first quarter, and the Hawks had six turnovers in the first 15 minutes to Bard's one, but it was still 1-1 going into the second quarter. Bard scored the first four goals of the second quarter - two by Rich and two by Peter Sojka - to go up, 5-1. But New Paltz scored three in the last three-and-a-half minutes to cut the deficit to 5-4. Rich potted another with seven seconds left before the half to make it 6-4 in favor of Bard at the break. Sojka scored twice more in the third quarter, but the Hawks scored four, and it was 8-8 going into the final stanza. Rich scored an unassisted goal at the 8:17 mark to make it 9-8. Zach Schmidt (Levittown, NY) tied it less than two minutes later. Sojka scored unassisted to make it 10-9, and Ryan Scully (Bay Shore, NY) tied it with 4:54 to go. Thomas Armetta (West Islip, NY) gave the Hawks their first lead since 1-0, scoring unassisted to make it 11-10 in favor of the hosts with 3:19 left. Rich tied it up with 2:47 remaining, and Bard fought off a late flurry, getting a key blocked shot with seven seconds left in regulation to keep it tied. At the same time, Scully was called for a major penalty, so the Raptors were man-up heading into overtime. Bard moved the ball around the outside, eventually getting it to Rich at the top. He took a quick step to his left and fired low, ending the game 32 seconds into the overtime. Funny that for this goal, he didn't go with the "tank" approach. Rich finished with six goals and an assist, and Sojka had five goals. Chuck Reycroft scored once and collected four ground balls, and Devon Wall had two assists. Jack Kaplan caused five turnovers and Lyle Healey made 17 saves. Armetta led New Paltz (1-2) with five goals. Nate Lindsay (Fulton, NY) made 18 saves. Bard returns home next, hosting SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday. Follow that game live right here.
