Freshman Sterlyn Ardrey recorded a team-high three goals and senior Jimmy Yanes added two goals and one assist to lead the Pride but Friar junior Dan Axelson scored his fourth goal of the game with 5:52 to play to snap a 10-10 tie and give Providence an 11-10 victory over Hofstra at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday afternoon. Providence improved to 3-4 on the season and snapped a two-game losing streak. Hofstra falls to 3-5 on the season. Ardrey recorded his first career hat-trick to boost his season total to five. Yanes produced his best output of the season with his three points while junior Ryan Tierney added a goal and two assists to extend his consecutive game points and goals streak to eight. Sophomore goalie Bobby Casey recorded 12 saves for his fifth double-digit save game of the season. Hofstra outshot the Friars, 42-37 and picked up 34 ground balls to Providence's 25. In addition to Axelson, senior Nick Hatzipetrakos also tallied four goals while junior Ryan Nawrocki added two goals and one assist. Senior Tate Boyce tallied 16 saves in the Providence cage for his third win of the season. In a contest that featured three tied scores but just one lead change, the Pride found themselves down big early as the Friars tallied five goals, including two by Hatzipetrakos, in the first ten minutes to go up 5-0. But the Pride answered with three goals in the final 3:56 of the period to cut the deficit to two as Yanes, sophomore Riley Forte and Tierney dented the twine. After a scoreless second quarter, Providence opened the third quarter with goals from Axelson and Nawrocki in the first 2:21 to boost the lead to 7-3. After Ardrey and Hatzipetrakos exchanged goals to move the score to 8-4, the Pride scored five unanswered goals to take a 9-8 lead on Yanes' second of the day just 36 seconds into the fourth quarter. Five different players, James Philbin, Bryce Tolmie, Nick Williams, Ardrey and Yanes tallied the goals in the run. Axelson got the equalizer less than a minute later before Hatzipetrakos gave the Friars a 10-9 advantage with 10:11 to play. Ardrey completed the hat-trick and tied the game for Hofstra just 26 seconds later. Axelson tallied the game-winner and his fifth goal of the season with just under six minutes to play and a sizzling shot. Hofstra had two chances to tie the contest in the final five minutes but Boyce made a save on a Ryan Kinnard shot, and an Ardrey went wide. The Pride return to action next Saturday, March 23 when Hofstra treks over to New Jersey to face the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers at 1 p.m. Notes - Hofstra is now 7-2 against Providence in the all-time series. - Saturday's game was the Pride's fourth contest against a Big East opponent.
