PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College Friars improved to 2-1 in the BIG EAST Conference and 6-6 overall as they defeated Marquette, 15-8, on April 13 in Providence, R.I. The Golden Eagles dropped to 6-6 (2-2 BIG EAST).
1STQUARTER: Providence scored the first five goals of the afternoon, with each coming from a different player. Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syosset, N.Y.), Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Matt Grillo (Setauket, N.Y.) each found the back of the net during the first 6:43 of the game (3-0). Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.) put Providence ahead, 4-0, with 1:42 left on the clock and Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.) added the Friars' fifth goal with 25-seconds remaining. Marquette closed the scoring in the first quarter just seven seconds later, converting immediately off the faceoff (5-1).
2ndQUARTER: Marquette's momentum carried into the second quarter, scoring back-to-back goals at 11:13 and 10:05 to cut the Friars' lead to 5-3. Kearns and Grillo answered with consecutive goals for the Friars' at 9:07 and 7:11, respectively, to halt the Golden Eagles' run and push their lead to 7-3. Marquette responded with a pair of goals from Ryan Fazio and Jack Zerrillo, but Kearns put Providence in front, 8-5, with his third of the day. Kearns' tally marked the first man-up goal for either team, as he finished the half with five points (3g/2a).
3rdQUARTER: The Friars and Golden Eagles each scored two goals in the third quarter. Providence drew a slashing call to go man-up with 44-seconds left in the quarter and carried the advantage into the fourth quarter along with its 10-7 lead. Grillo and Nawrocki each scored during the frame. It marked Grillo's third goal of the game to join Kearns with a hat trick.
4thQUARTER: Marquette pulled within two goals for the fourth time in the contest as Connor McClelland struck first in the final frame with 13:00 minutes on the clock. Providence went on to score five unanswered, including two goals each from Grillo and McGreen, to give PC a 15-8 victory.
GAME NOTES:
• The Friars earned their first victory of the season at home on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
• Providence held Marquette single-digit goals for the fourth time this season.
• The Friars have scored 15 goals in each of their last two games.
• Matt Grillo scored a career-high five goals against the Golden Eagles and owns 23 for the season.
• Tate Boyce collected eight saves in the game, including four in the first quarter – allowing Providence to jump out to a 5-1 lead through the first 15 minutes.
• Brendan Kearns recorded three goals and two assists for five points.
