Despite a furious comeback over the final five minutes, the Princeton women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a seven-goal deficit in the second half of Saturday's Ivy League showdown with Dartmouth on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium. The Big Green improved to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in Ivy play, with a 15-12 victory over Princeton (4-3, 1-1 Ivy). Princeton showed impressive resilience after Dartmouth grabbed a 13-6 with just over 15 minutes to play, and it started with greater success on draw controls. After losing nine of 12 draws in the first half, Princeton had an 11-6 edge in the second half, and many of those wins came over the final stretch of the game. A goal by Kyla Sears at the 11:22 mark cut the deficit to six, and then a goal by Julia Haney and two by Annie Cory over the span of 56 seconds made it 13-10 with 4:13 to play. Sears, who matched Cory with a team-best three goals, had a shot to make it a two-goal deficit, but Kiera Vrindten came up with arguably the biggest of her 11 saves with just over three minutes remaining in the win. Dartmouth responded with a goal to build the lead back to 14-10, but Princeton was not about to go away. Ellie McNulty scored an unassisted goal with 1:256 remaining, and then Camille Sullivan worked her way through the Big Green defense to score with 52 seconds remaining. That score left the deficit at two goals, the closest margin of the entire second half, but Dartmouth got a final draw control win it needed and was able to overcome a Tiger press to add one final goal with seven seconds remaining. The game was remarkably close statistically, with Dartmouth outshooting Princeton 36-34, while the Tigers had a 14-13 edge in ground balls. Both teams cleared with high efficiency, and each team had 11 saves in the matchup. Princeton returns to Sherrerd Field Thursday at 5 pm for a showdown with Syracuse. You can watch the game live on the Ivy League Network.
