A refocused Princeton squad used a second-half surge to claim a 13-12 win at No. 18 Penn State on Monday afternoon at Panzer Field. The Tigers, ranked No. 16, trailed by as many as five in the first half. Credit both the offense and defense to the comeback, as well as the draw controls. Princeton (4-2) was 1 of 14 in draws in the first half which allowed Penn State (6-4) to take possession and rattle off the game's first four goals and grab an 8-5 lead at halftime. Princeton won the draw battle in the second half, 9-4, and worked both ends of the field to go on a 5-1 run to cut it back to a one-goal game at 18:51. Down 6-1 in the first half, Princeton utilized a timeout and the tides started to turn. Freshman Sam Fish went in to goal in place of Mary Kate McDonough and both the offense and defense started to step up its games as well. Fish made a career-high 11 saves in the final 42+ minutes, including a big stop in the final seconds on the last possession of the game for her first career win. After Fish went into the game, Princeton went on a 4-2 run with two goals from Ellie McNulty, an eight-meter goal from Camille Sullivan and Annie Corey putting away a Kyla Sears pass. The second half started with a goal by Penn State's Katie O'Donnell but the Tigers went on another run, scoring the next five unanswered in a 10-minute span. Five different goal scorers helped to give Princeton its first lead, 10-9, including Allie Rogers, Julia Haney, Colby Chanencuk, Elizabeth George and Sears. A free-position goal by O'Donnell tied things at 10-10 at 18:23 but less than two minutes later Sears net her third of the afternoon off a roll dodge. Quinn Nicolai evened things at 11-11 with 15:05 on the clock. George regained the lead by shaking both her defenders loose and finding room at 10:12. She added another at 5:45 on a man-up opportunity off a Haney pass that gave Princeton its first two-goal lead of the afternoon. Kayla Brisolari had the final strike for Penn State on a free-position attempt at 4:12, while Fish denied the next shot with two minutes to play by Sophia Triandafils to keep her team ahead. Sears led the Princeton scoring with five points on three goals and two assists, while George had three goals and Haney had one goal and two assists. Freshmen defender Olivia Pugh caused three turnovers, while junior Kathryn Hallett and Sullivan won three draws apiece. Maria Auth and O'Donnell each scored three goals for the Nittany Lions. Madison Carter won 15 draws and O'Donnell and Brisolari caused three turnovers each. Lucy Lowe played the entire 60 minutes in goal and had eight saves. Princeton returns home after a four-game hiatus to host Dartmouth in an Ivy League contest on Saturday, March 24 at 1 p.m.
