The Capital University men's lacrosse team lost its season and home opener, 15-11, to Southern Virginia University on Saturday, February 15. The Crusaders held their ground until the Knights broke away in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Jack Scharner scored his second goal of the quarter to help Capital take a 4-3 lead into the first break. Down 5-3, Capital rattled off three consecutive goals to retake the lead with 11:44 remaining in the second quarter. Freshman Evan Frund began that run with his first collegiate goal on the man-up. Senior Tyler Faig scooped up the faceoff and ran it straight to the cage to score the final goal of that rally. Southern Virginia responded with four unanswered goals before Hughes broke the streak with his second of the night. That cut the deficit to two, 9-7, heading into halftime. The third quarter was a low-scoring frame in which only three goals were scored and neither team found the back of the net in the final 12:01 of the period. However, Southern Virginia scored twice in succession, which fed into a 5-0 run that spanned eight minutes into the fourth quarter. Cap trailed 14-8 at that point and did not score until 4:30 remained on the clock. Though CU scored three of the final four goals, included two man-up goals, the damage had been done and was too much to recover from. KEY PLAYERS AND NUMBERS CJ Hughes (Cincinnati, Ohio / Walnut Hills) kicked off his senior campaign with five goals on 17 shots plus two ground balls. Jack Scharner (Maineville, Ohio / King's) tallied three goals while freshman Evan Frund (Sewickley, Pa. / Quaker Valley) scored two goals on the Cap special teams unit. The Knights spread the ball around and had seven different players score. Six of those scored multiple goals, led by Chandler Wescott (3) and Zach Danneman (3). Wescott also added one assist to serve as the Knights' leading point getter. Though Cap scored four of its goals while on the man-advantage, they did so on 11 opportunities that totaled 7:30 of penalty time. Between Faig (14-25) and sophomore Lake Harris (3-5), Capital held the advantage on the X having won 17-of-30 faceoffs. Capital sophomore Josh Snyder made 14 saves in his first collegiate start but surrendered 13 goals in the loss. Freshman Sam McInturf relived Snyder for the final 8:44 and made four saves. Southern Virginia goalie Dalon Hampshire made 13 saves on 24 shots in the win. UP NEXT Capital (0-1) will face a short turnaround and play Sunday, February 16 against Elmhurst College in a neutral-site game. The Crusaders will play Elmhurst at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio at 3 p.m.
