Harvard enjoyed a lead after two quarters and found itself tied heading into the final frame, but could not escape with a victory, falling to Massachusetts, 12-9, Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field. Both teams used the early moments of the game to feel each other out as the scoreboard went untouched for nearly five minutes. Frankie Tangredi, however, stirred things up, scoring an unassisted goal with 10:09 left in the first. The Minutemen answered a little over two minutes later, but Harvard responded with unanswered single goals from Ivy League Rookie of the Week Austin Madronic, Nigel Andrews and Kyle Anderson to carry a 4-1 lead into the second quarter. UMass (1-2) methodically chipped away at the Harvard lead, getting three goals in the first 8:41 to level the score at 4-4. Madronic ended the Minutemen run with goal with 4:44 left in the half and Ryan Graff added another, giving the Crimson a 6-4 lead. UMass tacked on a goal with 2:31 to go in the quarter to trim the Harvard lead to 6-5, heading into halftime. The scoring slowed once the action resumed as the teams combined for three goals in the third period. Unfortunately for Harvard, Massachusetts scored two of them to knot the score at 7-all. The Minutemen's two goals surrounded an Anderson goal, which came with 2:20 remaining in the stanza. Harvard struck first in the fourth quarter as Myles Hamm tickled the twine on an extra-man opportunity just 47 seconds in. UMass, however, stifled the Crimson on defense and controlled possession, leading to four unanswered goals and an 11-8 lead. Hamm gave Harvard hope with another goal with 2:36 left in regulation, but the Crimson could not dent the scoreboard the rest of the way. The Minutemen added one last goal to provide the final margin. Harvard Highlights Anderson, Hamm and Madronic each scored two goals to lead the team in the category. Graff, who scored a career-high five goals at North Carolina last week, added one goal and a team-high-tying two assists. Hamm's two goals, two assists and team-high four points were all career bests. Entering the contest, the sophomore had recorded one goal for one point in his career. Goalie Kyle Mullin made a game-high-tying 13 saves, which were two off his career high. Tangredi tied his career high with his one goal and Chase Strupp recorded his first-career point with his second-quarter assist. Next Up Harvard has a quick turnaround as it will face Holy Cross on the road this Tuesday at 4 p.m. The game will air on the Patriot League Network.
