Junior attackman Brian Cunningham scored four goals and added an assist and Saints' goalkeeper Alex Terry made a season-high 13 saves as the No. 20 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team downed Bowdoin 13-5 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon in St. Leo, Florida. The Saints improved to 5-0 on the season, after topping their second NESCAC team of the season and defeated Bowdoin for the first time since 2003. With the loss, Bowdoin fell to 4-2 overall. Conor Caffrey and Harrison Koch each recorded two goals and an assist, while Caffrey caused two turnovers for the Saints. Ben Murtagh and Jack Hennessey notched a goal and an assist, while Kyle Gagne, Peter Koch and Alex Mapstone all tallied a goal for the Scarlet and Brown. Patrick Abad caused a team-best three turnovers and picked up two ground balls, while Zachary Prime dominated the faceoff dot, going 15-for-22 and picking up a team-high six ground balls. Chris Fowler tallied his 12th goal of the season to put Bowdoin on the board just 22 seconds into play, but the Saints responded with three straight goals from Mapstone, Harrison Koch and Cunningham to take a 3-1 lead heading into the second quarter. Will Murtagh brought the Polar Bears within one, but once again the Saints responded. This time with four unanswered goals to take a 7-2 lead. Sam Langan scored for Bowdoin, just nine seconds before halftime, but the Saints maintained a four goal advantage heading into the second half. Ben Murtagh recorded his second goal of the season to give the Saints an 8-3 lead just 56 seconds into the opening frame. Fowler added his second of the game, but the Scarlet and Brown saw goals from Gagne, Caffrey, Cunningham and Peter Koch, strengthening the Saints lead to 12-4 with 3:19 to play in the third frame. Jake Crossman and Cunningham traded goals about a minute apart in the fourth and Terry made three saves to seal the win for the Saints. "It was another good effort across the board by so many different players," said head coach Mike Mahoney '93 P'22. "They were ready to compete and battled hard for 60 minutes. Today was a great team win. We now have a very quick turnaround to Thursday's game before heading back north." Fowler led Bowdoin with two goals and an assist, while Will Murtagh, Langan and Jack Crossman all scored once. Sam Carlin picked up three ground balls for the Polar Bears, while Caleb Geitz caused three turnovers. Jack O'Connor finished with 10 saves for Bowdoin. The Saints outshot Bowdoin 41-28 and held a 23-18 shots on goal advantage and a 28-23 edge in ground balls. Cunningham notched a man-up goal for the Saints, who went 1-for-3 on man-up opportunities and killed off all five of Bowdoin's extra-man advantages. St. Lawrence will take on Western New England on Thursday, March 21 at the University of Tampa at 6 p.m. before heading back to the North Country to take on Bard on March 23.
