Nine different Titans found the back of the net, and it was a tie game late in the first, but an Ohio State run spelled doom as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team fell, 23-9, to the 12th-ranked Buckeyes at the Woody Hayes Center on Tuesday night. Freshman Cam Kostus ended the game with a goal and career-best two assists, tying his career-high in points, while junior Brett Erskine posted a goal and a helper. Sophomore AJ Van Voorhis recorded two assists and sophomore David Beacom and freshman Ivan Progar scored their first collegiate goals. Ohio State (1-0) scored the first three goals of the contest, but the Titans (1-1) answered with three unanswered as the game was tied 3-3 with under 1:30 left in the first. The Buckeyes then posted 13-straight markers to open the game up before the red, white and blue tallied two in the third and ended the game on a 4-0 run. Senior Sam McClain tallied a career-high four caused turnovers with a career-tying four ground balls and scored a goal. Junior Paul Manuszak posted three caused turnovers with six GB's, and junior Ollie Nigh picked up a team-high and tied his career-high with seven ground balls. Senior Alex Jarzembowski won 14 faceoffs and had five ground balls in the contest, while redshirt freshman Jake Freedlander was 3-of-6 in his collegiate debut. Junior Logan Shamblin made five saves in net and sophomore Tyler Hart made his Titan debut posting two saves in the final period. Detroit Mercy will return home for four-straight, starting with a visit from Bellarmine on Feb. 18 with a Noon start at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac. To purchase tickets, click here. First Period: Ohio State started the game with three-straight goals After a Jarzembowski faceoff win, Figueiras stopped the Buckeyes run with a goal at 6:58 Shamblin made a save and that started an offensive possession that saw Kostus fed freshman Ryan Birney and he beat the keeper to make it 3-2 at the 4:31 mark. Defense then tied the game as McClain forced a turnover and Erskine found Turner for a score to make it 3-3 with 2:40 left Ohio State added a late goal to jump out in front 4-3 after one Second Period: Ohio State opened the game up with 10 goals in the period Shamblin made his third save at 8:09 and another at 2:25 Third Period: Erskine scored at 13:04 to break a long Ohio State run The defense blocked a couple of OSU shots McClain fired in a goal from distance with 9:14 remaining He then forced another turnover and picked up a ground ball and did the same with 3:14 on the clock Shamblin made a save with 22 seconds left Fourth Period: Manuszak had a caused turnover early in the period Van Voorhis set up redshirt freshman Kyle Waters' goal at 9:51 Hart made a save at 8:52 After the defense forced a shot clock violation, Beacom scored his first goal with 6:47 remaining Senior Alex Akins had a caused turnover and that led to a goal by Kostus, set up by a pass from Van Voorhis Progar scored a goal on his very first shot with 2:07 remaining Game Notes: The Titans are 1-9 all-time against Ohio State with the one win at home in 2015, 9-8, in the head coaching debut of Chris Kolon '09 (MBA) Detroit Mercy is now 2-12 all-time against current members of the Big Ten, with that win against Ohio State and a win over Michigan in 2012 The Titans are 0-18 all-time against nationally-ranked teams Jarzembowski now has 482 career faceoff wins and has won double-digit faceoffs in 29 career games Jarzembowski is now tied for second in school history with 170 career ground balls, trailing the school-record holder in Jordan Houtby's 289 Akins is now tied for sixth in school history with 42 caused turnovers McClain's previous career-best in caused turnovers was three at St. Bonaventure Manuszak now has 100 career ground balls Nigh's other seven ground ball game was against Quinnipiac in the MAAC Championship semifinals last season
