Host Navy (2-0) scored the only three goals of the fourth quarter to pull away late and defeat UMBC, 11-6, in the opener for the Retrievers at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium. UMBC junior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) posted his fourth career hat trick to lead the offense for the Retrievers. Sophomore linemate Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added a pair of goals. Trailing 7-4 at the half, the Retrievers outscored Navy, 2-1, on goals by Frawley and Patschorke to cut the deficit to 8-6 late in the third quarter. UMBC had an excellent chance to creep closer, but Navy netminder Ryan Kern made a big save in the final minute of the stanza. The Mids would score twice in the first 3:18 of the final period to increase their advantage to 10-6 and UMBC could not answer. UMBC outshot Navy, 41-40, but Kern turned aside 14 Retriever shots, including four in the fourth quarter. UMBC sophomore netminder Tommy Lingner (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) collected nine saves in the season debut. Navy charged in front, 4-1, scoring four times in the first 8:53 of the game. But Frawley scored his second of the quarter at the 11:07 mark and the Retrievers cut the deficit to 4-3 after 15 minutes when sophomore attackman Trevor Patschorke fired in a rocket on a helper from newcomer Josh Jordan (Lunenburg, Mass.) at the 13:16 mark. The teams exchanged goals to open the second quarter, as sophomore Steven Zichelli (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) brought UMBC to within 5-4 at the 9:31 mark. The Retrievers had two possessions with a chance to tie the game, but committed a turnover and had a fast-break shot denied by Navy goalkeeper Ryan Kern. Kern started a fast-break the other way and the Mids converted to take a 6-4 lead at the 11:40 mark. Navy would add a goal with 2:23 to play in the half and took a 7-4 lead into the break. UMBC was buoyed by the play of freshman face-off specialist P.J. Argiros (Levittown, N.Y.), who won 9-of-10 second quarter draws. Navy recovered in the second half and captured 7-of-8 to finish the game with an 11-10 advantage. UMBC heads down to Richmond for a battle with the 2018 Southern Conference champions. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 3:00 p.m.
