Host Richmond (2-1) scored seven first quarter goals to take command and went on to defeat UMBC, 17-12, in the Spiders' home opener at Robins Stadium.
The Retrievers dropped their second road game in five days to open the campaign.
Sophomore attackman Trevor Patschorke (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) led the UMBC offense with a career-high four-goal, two-assist evening. It was his second career hat-trick and the sophomore has 15 goals in six games played for the black-and-gold.
Junior attackman Brett McIntyre (Calgary, Alberta) came off the bench and notched his first career three-goal game. Senior transfer Josh Jordan (Lunenburg, Mass.) scored twice and added an assist for UMBC, which tallied the most goals in a game since the 15-4 win over Mercer in February of 2017.
The Retrievers got off to a strong start as Patschorke and Jordan scored 24 seconds apart in the first 2:53 of play to take a quick 2-0 lead. After UR responded with a pair of equalizers, Jordan ripped a shot just under the crossbar to give the visitors a 3-2 lead with 9:12 to play in the first period.
But Richmond would reel off five consecutive scores to end the quarter and lead, 7-3, after 15 minutes. They would extend the run to 7-0 before McIntyre halted the surge at the 3:06 mark of the second.
UR would extend the margin to 11-5, but late goals by sophomore Mitch Howell (Laurel, Md/DeMatha) and Patschorke trimmed the deficit to 11-7 at intermission.
UMBC came within three goals on two occasions in the third, as Patschorke completed his hat-trick and scored the Retrievers' first man-up goal of the year just 34 seconds into the stanza. After UR responded, junior attackman Ryan Frawley (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) brought the guests to within 12-9 just 2:33 into the frame.
But the Retriever offense went dormant and Richmond added two more goals in the period to lead, 14-9, after 45 minutes. The Spiders extended their lead to 16-9 early in the fourth quarter to distance themselves from the visitors.
UMBC outshot UR, 46-42, and won the battle at the "x", taking 20 of 33 draws. Freshman face-off specialist Brandon Galloway (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) debuted by winning 14 of 20 and collecting a team-best six ground balls.
UMBC will open the home schedule when they welcome Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 4:00 p.m.
