UMass Boston lacrosse scored a program-record 30 goals against host Castleton University Saturday afternoon, to earn the program's first-ever 2-0 start in Little East Conference play. THE BASICS UMass Boston 30, Castleton University 6 (UMass Boston 2-0, Little East 2-0) (Castleton University 0-6, Little East 0-1) HOW IT HAPPENED Four players recorded hat tricks and 16 players found the back of the net for the Beacons in the win over the Spartans. Junior Gavin Admirand (Marshfield, Mass.) paced the attack with a team-high six goals and nine points. Darragh Fahey (Walpole, Mass.) tied his career-high with five assists and eight points, while Conor Lenfest (Walpole, Mass.) and Donovan Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) each finished with a hat trick and a combined five assists. Michael Claflin (Newton, Mass.) and Jack Riley (Wrentham, Mass.) each tacked on two goals apiece. Senior face-off man Jack Dobrzynski (West Greenwich, R.I.) led the Beacons with 22 face-off wins (22-32) and a team-high 16 ground balls. UMass Boston used all four of their goalies in the contest. Trevor Koppy (Attleboro, Mass.), Charlie Cook (Bedford, Mass.), Christian Meinhold (Boxborough, Mass.) and Otto Kirleis (Boston, Mass.) combined to make 18 saves on 24 shots. Collin Johnson, Chris LaBonte and Trey Lang each scored twice for the hosts, who suffered their sixth-straight setback to start the season. In the cage, Maxx Ingison and Chris Wilk teamed up for 18 saves on the afternoon. Admirand opened the scoring with a man-up goal just over three minutes into the game. LaBonte answered for the hosts at 10:58, but it would be all UMass Boston from there. UMass Boston responded with two goals in the next 33 seconds and eight-straight goals to close out the quarter (9-1). The Beacons tacked on a season-high 10 goals in the second quarter to extend their advantage to 19-4 at halftime. They would keep the momentum going in the second half, as they outscored the hosts 11-2 in the final 30 minutes. BY THE NUMBERS UMass Boston scored a program-record mark for goals for the third in six games. The Beacons set the program record in their season opener last season with 26 goals against Husson University and tied that mark with 26 goals against Emmanuel College (Mass.) on March 4, 2020. Admirand finished the contest with six goals, three assists, three ground balls and a team-high four caused turnovers. In six career games as a Beacon, Admirand has posted 57 points (36 goals and 21 assists). The Beacons improved to 2-1 all-time against Castleton University. Today's win marked their first victory over the Spartans since the team's inaugural season (1982). UMass Boston finished 24-30 on clear attempts, 23-37 on face-offs and 2-6 in man-up opportunities. Lenfest eclipsed 150 career points in the victory (154). He now sits ninth in program history in points and is just four goals away from becoming the eighth player in program history to score 100 career goals. Freshmen goalies Meinhold and Kirleis each made their collegiate debuts in the win. Meinhold made a team-high 13 saves (on 15 shots) in 20:39 of action, while Kirleis stopped the only shot he faced in the final 9:21. Sixteeen players scored goals in the win, while 19 total players recorded at least one point. UMass Boston has now recorded 20 or more goals in six-straight games. The previous program record for scoring 20 or more goals was two games in a row. The Beacons have scored 151 goals during their current six-game winning streak (25.2 goals per game). Prozinski needs just six points to reach 200 points for his career. He finished his four seasons at UMass Dartmouth with 184 points (116 goals and 68 assists). WHO'S NEXT UMass Boston will head to Mansfield, Connecticut on Tuesday evening (5:30 p.m.), when they will aim to earn their first-ever win over Eastern Connecticut State University.
