The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team used seven unanswered goals in the second half to boost the Titans to a 16-13 victory over John Carroll University, Tuesday evening, March 3, inside Tucci Stadium. IWU saw its record go up to 4-1 while John Carroll dipped to 1-1. After John Carroll scored first, senior Wil Laidlaw (Breckenridge, Colo.-Summit) got the Titans on the board to tie the score 1-1 with 11:04 remaining in the opening quarter. IWU got two goals from junior Jake Simpson (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) and senior Patrick Murphy (Palatine, Ill.-St. Viator) to give them a 3-1 lead at the 4:06 mark. The Blue Streaks managed to get a goal to make the score 3-2 at the end of quarter one. JCU tied the game at 3-all to begin the second quarter. IWU responded with a score from freshman Carson Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) to regain the lead, byt the Blue Streaks came up with four straight goals to take a 7-4 lead with 2:27 remaining. Murphy scored his second of the game 16 seconds later to cut the momentum, but JCU put another one in the net to take an 8-5 lead going into halftime. JCU got on the board in the second half first, then sophomore Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) fired the ball into the net twice, with the second being his 75th career goal, and Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) got on the board to cut the score to 9-8 with 10:45 to play in the third. The Blue Streaks responded with a goal of their own, but Murphy and Laidlaw netted home their second goals of the night to tie the score at 10 with 3:18 left. Smith got his third goal of the quarter to put the Titans up by one 25 seconds later. Senior Ben Arends (Edwards, Ill.-Dunlap HS) buried one in the back of the net moments later to put IWU ahead 12-10 at the end of the third quarter. John Carroll committed a penalty that put IWU a man up, in which Smith cashed in the man up opportunity to extend the lead for the Titans. Connor Kiichle made the scoring run six-in-a-row with his second goal of the game at the 10:07 mark in the fourth quarter to make the score 14-10. Smith then put in his fifth of the game which forced John Carroll to take a timeout at 8:58. JCU stopped the scoring streak with two goals of their own before Arends put home his second goal of the game that made the score 16-12 with 4:08 to play. John Carroll cut the lead by two but couldn't any closer to make the final score 16-14. Six Titans scored at least a pair of goals, with Smith, the defending CCIW Offensive Player of the Week, netting five of his own. On face offs, junior Max Bousky (Peoria, Ill.-Notre Dame HS) went 23-for-33 and picked up a team-high 16 ground balls. Junior Will Harris (Bloomington, Minn.-Holy Angels HS) saved 16 shots in goal for IWU. The Titans generated 39 shots with while allowing 24 and picked up 40 ground balls while the Blue Streaks picked up 26. On clear attempts, IWU was 16-for-19 while JCU ended the game 20-for-23. Up next for the men's lacrosse team is a road trip to eighth-ranked Ursinius College, Saturday, March 7, with the game scheduled to start at 1 p.m. ET.
