Bobby McClure marked another major milestone and the No. 8 Ursinus College men's lacrosse team put its offensive arsenal on full display in a 20-8 victory over visiting Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday. The Bears got points from 14 different players in storming out to an 18-2 lead and easily matching last season's 6-0 start for the best since a 7-0 opening in 2010. McClure finished with three goals and two assists (all in the first half), and his second helper of the day also doubled as the 200th point of his career. The senior is the 23rd player in Centennial Conference history to reach that number. Ben Minardi got the hosts off to a fast start in the first of four consecutive games on Patterson Field. The senior, who scored six goals in Wednesday's victory at Montclair State and even made an appearance on Sportscenter's Top 10 that night, beat his man and scooped in a shot for the first of his game-high four goals just 52 seconds into the contest. McClure then found Erik Ojert wide open in front of the cage for a quick finish and the rookie's first collegiate goal. The Titans (4-2) pulled one back, but Ursinus went on a rampage, pouring in seven unanswered markers over the remainder of the first quarter. Aaron Grill scored on a high shot, then laid a pass off for a goal by Alex Dean before McClure fired home a rocket to make it 5-1. McClure added another about a minute later and Dean did the same, loading up from distance and rifling home a laser into the top right corner. Tommy Reinhart deposited another assist from McClure to give the senior his milestone moment, and the Bears' lead ballooned to 9-1 when Reinhart saved the ball from going out of bounds and passed over to Minardi for a low shot with five ticks left in the frame. The nine goals were the most in a quarter in team history. Ursinus kept piling on, scoring 16 seconds into the second stanza as Andrew Malicki corralled a loose ball off the opening faceoff and fired upfield for Rei Lopez, who took the open space and netted his second goal of the season. Hakan Atillasoy and McClure found the back of the net in short succession before Illinois Wesleyan finally stopped a 10-goal run, only for the Bears to spring into halftime with a 14-2 advantage following goals by Aaron Grill and Atillasoy. The spread grew as large as 18-2 in the third as Minardi plugged the top right corner of the cage with a pin-point missile, Dean set up a goal by Sam Mutz before potting one of his own, and Ojert grabbed his second of the day with 6:47 to go in the period. The Titans scored six goals the rest of the way, but it was just window dressing as Ursinus established a new season high in goals. Minardi, McClure, and Dean all recorded hat tricks for the Bears. Ojert, Grill, and Atillasoy each finished with two goals and an assist, while Reinhart dished out a career-high three helpers to go with his goal. Joe Donnelly notched his first point in two seasons with an assist, and Julian Castilleja had the second assist of his career. Parker Wolf (four caused turnovers) and Chase Rondeau (three) captained a fierce defensive effort that forced 22 turnovers and limited the Titans to a host of low-percentage efforts. Illinois Wesleyan was just 1-of-6 on man-up opportunities. Malicki tied for the team lead with five ground balls, with Tre Tillman adding four. Chris Porzelt backstopped another fantastic performance, racking up 11 saves and permitting only four goals before being replaced after the third quarter. Matt Nunziata made three saves before giving way to Matthew Sy, who made his collegiate debut and played out the final two minutes and change. Ursinus held a 53-37 advantage in shots, firing off 37 in the first half alone. The Bears converted half of their eight extra-man chances. Lopez finished 12-of-21 at the faceoff X. Men's lacrosse continues its extended home stand on Wednesday against Stockton.
