The top-ranked Wesleyan men's lacrosse team cruised to a commanding 17-6 win over Coast Guard on a frigid Wednesday night at Citrin Field. The Cardinals led 10-0 at halftime en route to the victory. Seniors Carter Hawthorne (4g, 1a) and Christian Barker (5a) led Wesleyan with five points each as the home team improved to 2-0 on the year. Riley McNulty led the Bears with three goals but Coast Guard, who is receiving votes in the USILA Top-25 Coaches Poll, dropped to 2-2. GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Barker assisted on the first two goals of the game, both to Hawthorne, as Wesleyan opened on a 2-0 lead at the 6:56 mark and never looked back. The Cardinals dominated the first half of action, leading 4-0 after one and scoring six goals in the second quarter. Barker and Hawthorne linked up three times on Wednesday night, all in the first half, as the home team led by 10 at the break. Coast Guard ended its scoreless streak just under two minutes into the second half as Benner Geurtsen found McNulty for the score. However, Wesleyan responded with four unanswered goals and held a commanding 14-1 lead entering the fourth quarter. The Bears opened the fourth on a 3-0 run within the first 2:18, but back-to-back goals by Wesleyan extended the lead to 12 with 9:22 to play, putting the game out of reach. INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Colin Uyeki and Matt Chase each scored three times and assisted on another for the Cardinals, while Ronan Jacoby added two goals. Otto Bohan was terrific in net and finished with 10 saves. Geurtsen registered two goals and one assist for Coast Guard and Logan Tobias registered a goal as well. Trey Johnson started in net and made eight saves in the first half, while Charles McAllister took over in the second. Wesleyan was a perfect 22-22 on clear attempts and held a 41-30 advantage in shots. UP NEXT: The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, March 9 and will play at NESCAC rival and No. 20 Bates. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
