LOUISVILLE, Ky.—What started with such promise ended in disappointment for the Bellarmine lacrosse team as the Knights dropped a 7-6 decision in overtime to Wagner in both teams' season openers on Saturday afternoon in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium. The homestanding Knights jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage, but saw the Seahawks come soaring back with their own 3-0 run to knot the score at three apiece heading into halftime. Wagner and Bellarmine swapped a pair of goals in the third quarter before the Knights took their first lead of the second half on a Morgan Macko to Stephen Votto connection early in the fourth period. The Seahawks evened the score a few minutes later, and neither team scored in the final 9:01 to send the game to overtime. The Knights' J.T. Simonton claimed the overtime faceoff, and freshman Sean Riley had a good look from the right side, but Wagner goalie Matt Sefcik came up with the save. Bellarmine then forced a turnover but after Macko's shot sailed high, possession was awarded to Wagner. The Seahawks made good on their only shot of the extra period as Tim Schmidt got a pass away as he was falling, and Spencer Kaufman finished from the right side for the game-winning goal. "Both teams competed with great effort, but we were not able to finish enough of our opportunities, and Wagner's goalie was outstanding," said Bellarmine Coach Jim Mitchell, who made his head coaching debut today. "Our defense played with great purpose, and Ian Reilly was strong in net, but overall we had too many turnovers and mistakes to win the game today." For the game, the Knights owned a 43-33 shot advantage, but Sefcik came up with 16 saves for the Seahawks. Bellarmine also won the ground ball battle 31-21 and went 12-5 at the face-off "X." Individually, Macko was the offensive leader to the Knights contributing to three of BU's six scores with two goals and an assist. Landon Trout added a pair of goals for Bellarmine and Seay notched the game's first goal, which also was his collegiate first. For Wagner (1-0), Kaufman collected a hat trick scoring on three of his six shots while Matt Chechini added a goal and an assist. Defensively, Josh Wehn was big for Bellarmine with four caused turnovers and three ground balls, and Ian Reilly got the start between the pipes and collected 13 saves while playing the entire 62-plus minutes. After today's home opener, the Knights (0-1) now play on the road for its next three games, including one week from today when Bellarmine faces Marquette.
