The Castleton University men's lacrosse team built a four-goal lead in the second quarter, but a furious comeback by SUNY Canton handed the Spartans their third loss in a row to start the season as Canton was victorious, 12-10, at Dave Wolk Stadium. Castleton (0-3) scored each of the game's first four goals, but Canton (1-2) responded with five straight goals over a 12-minute span of action to take a 5-4 lead in the third quarter. The two sides went back-and-forth from there, with Canton holding off Castleton for the win. The Spartans had a 54-41 edge in shots, but Canton had an advantage in ground balls, 42-37, and face-off wins, 17-8. The Spartans were 17-of-23 on the clear, while Canton was 12-of-16. The Kangaroos were 2-of-6 on man-up opportunities, while Castleton was 1-of-4. Chris Labonte led the way with a three-goal day for Castleton, notching a hat-trick for the second game in a row. Cameron Russell, Collin Johnson and Casey Meczywor had two scores each, while Conner Ladabouche notched his first-career goal in the game. Ladabouche also had an assist on the day, as did Luc Issa. Issa caused a game-high four turnovers, while Jeremy Clements had a game-high seven ground balls for the Spartans. Maxx Ingison stopped nine shots in goal in the loss. Justin LaDuke had a standout day between the pipes for Canton, racking up 17 saves and scoring a goal on a last-second shot to end the third quarter. With the score tied at 8-8, LaDuke heaved the ball down the field and received a lucky bounce over the Spartans' last line of defense and into the net to give Canton a 9-8 lead after three quarters. Noah Robinson led all players with five goals and added an assist for a six-point day, while Jacob Facey scored twice for the Kangaroos. Hunter Olsen had a goal and three assists in Canton's win, while Nick Walberger and Brandon Schmidt had six ground balls each. Eli Kocsis and Andrew Garrett had three caused turnovers apiece. Castleton started the game strong on offense, dominating possession time and scoring chances. Russell opened the scoring less than two minutes into play with his fifth goal of the season, before Ladabouche netted his first of the year to double the lead at the five-minute mark. With Castleton still leading 2-0 in the second quarter, Meczywor and Labonte tallied goals to push the Spartans' lead to 4-0 with 6:20 left until halftime. Robinson scored his first of the game to get Canton on the board with 4:31 to play before the break, and Facey added his first of the day two minutes later to make it a 4-2 game at the half. Canton came out firing in the third quarter, as Robinson scored just 28 seconds into the frame to make it a 4-3 game. Olsen then scored six minutes later to knot the score at 4-4, taking advantage of a man-up opportunity for Canton. Dante Coco gave the Kangaroos their first lead of the day with an assist from Sam Martin just more than one minute after Olsen's goal, but Castleton responded with two goals in a two-minute span to regain the lead, 6-5. Johnson's first score of the day tied it at 5-all, before Labonte potted his second goal of the day to give Castleton the one-goal lead. Canton responded with three unanswered goals to take a two-goal edge, 8-6, but goals from Russell and Meczywor tied the score at 8-8 with just 21 seconds to play in the quarter. After winning the ensuing face-off following Meczywor's goal, Castleton took a long-range shot with just seconds remaining in the third quarter. LaDuke made the stop, and fired the ball to the other end of the field, where it hopped into the goal as the horn sounded, giving Canton a 9-8 lead with just 15 minutes to play. Canton extended its lead to two, 10-8, when Robinson completed his hat-trick with 12:34 to play in the game, but Castleton halved the lead when Labonte scored his third of the day just 36 seconds later. A pair of goals by Robinson—the last of which came with just 1:20 to play—put the game out of reach, but Johnson tacked on one last goal for Castleton with 1:00 remaining to give the game its final score, 12-10. The Spartans return to action Tuesday night at SUNY Potsdam with a 7 p.m. start time.
