The Marietta College men's lacrosse team fell 15-10 to Chatham University on Wednesday (March 11) evening at Don Drumm Stadium. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 3-4 on the season and the Cougars improve to 3-4 overall. Chatham opened the scoring less than a minute into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Marietta responded to tie the game at 1-1 a minute later when Jimmy Border (Cranberry Township, Pa. /Seneca Valley) scored an unassisted goal. After five minutes of scoreless action the Cougars regained a 2-1 edge. A minute and a half later Border tied the game at 2-2 for the Pioneers, with just under eight minutes to play in the opening quarter. Chatham scored the final goal of the first quarter, and led 3-2 to enter the second frame. 20 seconds into the second quarter Marietta tied the game at three goals apiece, when Connor Ficke (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) scored a man up goal. The Pioneers took their first lead of the game when Zach Klein (Evergreen, Co./Evergreen) found the back of the net at the 12:53 minute mark of the second quarter. Five minutes later the Cougars regained the lead with three straight goals and held a 6-4 edge at the 4:30 minute mark of the second quarter. Marietta scored the final goal of the second quarter when Ficke found the back of the net, but the Pioneers trailed 6-5 at the intermission. Chatham opened the third quarter with back-to-back goals and notched an 8-5 edge, two and a half minutes into the quarter. Marietta responded just over a minute later when Kyle Fleshman (Davidsonville, Md./South River) scored off a feed from Klein to make the score, 8-6. The Cougars scored the final three goals of the third quarter and the Pioneers trailed 11-6 to enter the final frame. The teams each swapped a pair of goals to open the fourth quarter, but Chatham maintained a 13-8 edge with just over six minutes to play in the game. The Marietta goals were scored by John Sanford (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) and Klein. The Cougars scored back-to-back goals and took a 15-8 edge with five minutes to play in the game. Four minutes later the Pioneers made the score 15-9 with an unassisted goal by Fleshman. 30 seconds later Marietta scored again to trim the lead to 15-10 when Chad Stowell (Watertown, Minn./Delano) scored a man-up goal off an assist from Jackson McGill (New Market, Md./Oakdale). The Pioneers comeback fell short and Marietta fell 15-10. The Pioneers were led by Klein as he had two goals, two groundballs, two caused turnovers, and notched an assist in the game. In addition to Klein, Border, Ficke, and Fleshman all notched two goals in the game. The Marietta defense was led by Jacob Morlando (White Bear Lake, Minn./Stillwater), he had a game high three caused turnovers and picked up a pair of groundballs. Dane Barker (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) was in the goal for Marietta, he faced 44 shots, 28 of which were on goal, and made 13 saves in the game. The Pioneers will return to the field Saturday (March 14) when they travel to take on Calvin College, with the game scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
