Senior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. and junior Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. each tally five points as the Hampden-Sydney College lacrosse team (2-1) dropped a 10-9 decision to nationally-ranked #20 Christopher Newport University (3-0) on Saturday night in Newport News. The Captains scored with 17 seconds left in the contest to secure the win. The two teams were tied after one period, 2-2. CNU open with a pair of goals to take the lead, but Hayden (7:14) and Medwar (2:36) each found the back of the net to brings things even after one period. Medwar had the assist on Hayden's goal. The Tigers made it three goals in a row, with Medwar taking the pass from Hayden at 14:48 to give H-SC the 3-2 advantage. The Captains responded with two goals of their own. With less than eight seconds left in the first half and the ball on their defensive end of the field, the Tigers made two quick passes as junior Canevin Wallace/Annapolis, Md. found Hayden in front of the net. Hayden made a quick shot passed the goalie with one second left to bring the score even at 4-4 heading into intermission. Once again, the two teams went back and forth to start the third quarter. After CNU scored 17 seconds into the period, Medwar scored his third goal of the game at 12:51, unassisted. The Captains pulled ahead, 6-5, two minutes later at 10:52. Junior Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. responded with winning the faceoff and running straight for the goal and scoring just five seconds later, pulling the score even at 6-6. Hayden scored his third goal of the game at 9:21 to conclude scoring for either team in the period. Junior Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, N.C. opened the scoring for the Tigers in the fourth at 9:24, giving H-SC the 8-7 lead. Hayden added his fourth goal of the evening at 5:56 off a pass from Medwar. The Captains scored the final two goals of the game, including the game-winner with 17 seconds left to pick up the victory. Senior Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. made 15 saves while adding two ground balls in the loss. Brummett won 15 faceoffs on the evening, marking the third game in a row with at least 15 faceoff wins. The Tigers led in saves (15-11), ground balls (38-33) and faceoffs won (16-7). The Tigers return home on Saturday, February 29 when they host Greensboro in a non-conference match-up from Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium at 1 p.m.
