University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse went into halftime knotted at six with Ohio State, but the No. 13 nationally ranked Buckeyes pulled away in the third quarter for an 11-7 decision over the Minutemen at Garber Field on Saturday. Senior goalie Sean Sconone posted a career-high-tying 20 saves while Gabriel Procyk led the offense with three goals for his second collegiate hat trick in as many games played. Junior first-line midfielder Jeff Trainor recorded three points on two goals and an assist. Sophomore attack Chris Connolly posted a pair of assists while redshirt junior two-way midfielder Billy Philpott and freshman first-line midfielder Scott Del Zotto scored once each. Del Zotto's goal was the first of his collegiate career. Sconone had six saves each in the second and fourth quarters, five in the third frame and three in the first. He previously netted 20 stops in an 11-4 win at Fairfield on April 21, 2018. His 20 saves in each game mark the most since current associate head coach Doc Schneider had 21 in a 7-6 win over Hobart on April 11, 2009. UMass junior close defenseman Jackson Suboch posted three caused turnovers and as many groundballs. Senior position-mate Isaac Paparo had as many turnovers forced alongside one groundball. Tre Leclaire led Ohio State with four goals while Jack Jasinski posted two goals and as many assists. Jack Myers made it three Buckeyes with four points via his three assists and a tally. Josh Kirson answered Sconone's effort in net with 17 saves of his own, including eight in the pivotal third quarter when Ohio State bumped in front, 10-6. Procyk's hat trick propelled the UMass offense in the first half as he tallied three of the team's initial five goals. Procyk sandwiched two first quarter goals around a Leclaire tally as Massachusetts entered the second quarter down by one. After Del Zotto and Trainor scored on the bookends of a two-goal Ohio State run, Connolly found Procyk with three minutes, 47 seconds to go in the second quarter as the Maroon and White evened it at 5-all. After Jasinski scored with 2:18 to go, Trainor's second of the day, scored as he raced to his left and fired in a high shot, knotted the game at six entering the break. Ohio State's defense locked down in the third quarter and Kirson turned aside all eight of Massachusetts' on-target shots in the frame as the Buckeyes built a four-goal lead. Leclaire scored twice in the span while Myers and Colby Smith also found the back of the net. Philpott broke the scoreless streak with 8:38 to go, but the Minutemen were unable to pull closer the remainder of the frame. The Maroon and White return to action with a road trip to Harvard on Sat., Feb. 23. First faceoff in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
