No. 11 Notre Dame scored two goals in the final 70 seconds of regulation to force overtime on Saturday afternoon but No. 5 Ohio State scored the game winner in the first minute of the extra session to escape with an 11-10 win. Juniors Brian Willetts and Bryan Costabile each finished with three goals, while Wheaton Jackoboice added two goals and an assist. On the defensive end, Arden Cohen led the team with three caused turnovers and six ground balls. How It Happened Both teams defenses stood tall through the first 10 minutes of play, as both sides made a number of key saves to keep the game scoreless. The Irish broke the seal, as Connor Morin found the back of the net to give Notre Dame a 1-0 lead. Jackoboice then scored his first of the day before Ohio State finally got on the board in the final two minutes to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Irish at the end of the first quarter. The Irish continued their season trend of dominating the second quarters, outscoring the Buckeyes 4-1 in the frame to take a 6-2 lead into the halftime intermission. Willetts scored two of his three goals in the second stanza. Costabile opened the scoring in the third to increase Notre Dame's lead to 7-2 before the Ohio State attack woke up and scored four straight to close the gap to just one at 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter. Ohio State carried its momentum into the final 15 minutes of play, posting four of the first five goals of the period to go on top 10-8 with less than 90 seconds left in regulation. The Irish defense locked down and caused a big turnover and then scored immediately out of a timeout to trim the visitor's advantage to 10-9. Notre Dame's Charlie Leonard won the ensuing face-off and Costabile completed his hat trick with his third goal of the day with just 32 seconds left in the game to send the contest to overtime. The Irish had a great look in the extra session, as Willetts had a shot from right in front of goal but the Ohio State goalie was up to the challenge and kept the score level. The Buckeyes then managed to come up with the game-winning goal on the next possession as Colby Smith fired a shot into the net to give the visitors the 11-10 win. Up Next The Irish are back in action at Arlotta Stadium next weekend for their ACC home opener against Syracuse at noon ET Saturday, March 30. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and also be available to stream via WatchESPN.
