No. 5 Rutgers men's lacrosse battled No. 3 Maryland on Sunday at SHI Stadium. In a matchup between the top two teams in the league standings, Maryland claimed a 13-9 victory to stay unbeaten. Rutgers was led offensively by two goals apiece from Adam Charalambides and Shane Knobloch. "Give credit to Maryland," head coach Brian Brecht said. "They are one of the blue bloods of our league. To be successful, we needed to take care of ourselves. There were some self-inflicted wounds that cost us. We came out ready to play in the first half and had the momentum, had a couple of great stops defensively on a talented team. And the turnovers were even overall. They made us pay for our turnovers and we couldn't make them pay enough for their turnovers. Other than that second quarter, I thought the game was fairly even, but it's a 60-minute game, and all 15 minutes count the same." Maryland held the advantage in shots (40-34) and ground balls (31-24). Along with the multiples goals scored by Charalambides and Knobloch, RU got tallies from Connor Kirst, Eric Civetti, Brennan Kammish, David Sprock and Ryan Gallagher. Rutgers got off to a great start, taking a 4-2 lead. However, Maryland responded with a 7-0 run, as the Scarlet Knights were held scoreless for 19 minutes. Adam Charalambides stung home a late goal for RU, and the team went into the locker room trailing 8-5. The final 30 minutes were tight. Maryland outscored RU 3-2 in the third quarter, and the fourth quarter was 2-2. The Scarlet Knights just couldn't do enough late to get back into the game. Next up for the Scarlet Knights is another home contest, this one coming on Saturday, April 3 against No. 15 Ohio State. First face-off will come at 5 p.m., with a broadcast on Big Ten Network.
