WEST POINT, N.Y. – Ahead just 3-2 at halftime, the No. 13/15 Army West Point men's lacrosse team produced a strong second half on both ends of the field to defeat Hudson Valley rival Marist, 10-4, on Tuesday evening. The Black Knights posted a seven-goal second half while holding the Red Foxes to two to claim the victory. Army's defense shined allowing just four in the game causing 14 turnovers. AJ Barretto backed the defense with 10 saves on 27 shots faced for a .714 save percentage. The four goals allowed is a season-low. HOW IT HAPPENED The Black Knights had a slow start against Marist's zone, but netted the first tally of the game for the third consecutive game. Brendan Ryan netted his first of the year off a pass from Brendan Nichtern to put Army up 1-0 with 1:16 to play in the first quarter. Two goals to start off the second frame got the Cadets back into the swing of things and gave them a 3-0 lead. Connor DeWitt posted his first of the day before Miles Silva wowed the crowd with a behind-the-back rebound goal. The Red Foxes scored two straight tallies to close out the half to make it a one-goal game. Army and Marist traded goals to start of the second half, but three more in the third quarter put the Black Knights ahead 7-3. Matt Manown connected with Sean O'Brien to start the half off for Army. Nate Jones tallied his first of the year from the left side of the crease on a pass from O'Brien. O'Brien then scored a goal of his own a little over two minutes later with a bounce shot that beat Jake MacGregor high. To close out the third quarter, Barretto registered a stop setting up Manown for an unassisted transition goal after Tom Rigney carried the ball into the Army zone. Marist scored its final goal of the game 41 seconds into the fourth quarter, but three unanswered from the Cadets sealed the game. Jones setup Army's eighth goal of the contest when he gained possession of a wide shot and fed inside quickly to Silva. DeWitt scored his second of the day as the seconds were ticking down on the shot clock to keep things rolling. To close-out the game, Army's attack was high-pressure on the ride and forced a Marist turnover right in front of the crease. Silva picked up the loose ball and scored on the open net to finalize the score at 10-4. ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES Army improves to 3-0 against Marist all-time. Head coach Joe Alberici is 2-0 versus the Red Foxes. The Black Knights' defense stole the show today by allowing just four goals.
